What's new

Vie-Long Horsehair has arrived

I have been borderline on these for a while, if you like it, it just may push me to get one. Keep us posted. Also, is that pure horse or horse/badger?

Interesting... I've never used a horse hair brush before. I'll be interested to see what it is like.

I believe phil is carrying them now...been wondering about horse-hair...from what I've been told...it's great with creams but doesn't have the backbone for soaps...a lot of people like the soft, flexible hair though...

My barber uses an old Omega horse-hair brush. It does seem very soft to me, but it lathers his puck of Marvy soap without a problem.

I got this one from Best Grooming Tools. This one is just horsehair, but they have blended brushes of horsehair/badger and horsehair/boar in addition to badger and boar bristle. The horse/boar brushes I've seen online, but haven't seen for sale anywhere in the states.

Vie-Long describes it as somewhere between boar and badger, and as simplistic as it sounds, that's it in a nutshell (so far.)

I'm really interested in what happens as I break it in. I have a couple Semogues that greatly improved after a certain # of uses, but I don't know much about horse--if it splits, if it gets softer, if it stays springy or gets floppy. I'll keep everybody posted.

If anyone has tried the VL boar brushes, I'd love to hear some feedback. BGT says they're the best boars they've seen, but I'm wondering how they'd stand up to a Semogue.

I ordered one a few days ago from BGT - I expect it to be here in the next few days and will give a report.

Always wondered how horse hair lathers. I've heard pretty good. Too bad for the horse though or at least what's left of him.... obviously not the kentucky derby winner. Losers get sent to the glue factory

Says who? I only use soaps (shave stick) and it lathers just fine. It does have back bone, that's where it looks like boar. The softness is where it looks like badger.

No, and that is (also) so great about horse brushes: the horses are shaved (tail and manes) and are in perfect condition afterwards.

I have a cheap Turkish horse brush, and that one did break in, just like boar. Took about 2 weeks. Softer, but kept its backbone. Now it is a great brush.
