Today was a very sad day in the @ajkel64 household. We had to let our fur daughter Daisy go. She has not long turned 14 but was diagnosed at Christmas time with Canine Cognitive Disfunction. It all started earlier then that when we noticed her bumping into things all the time. We took her to the vets and were told that she had cataracts on her eyes. Nothing could be done unless we wanted to take her to a specialist hospital in Sydney (4 hour drive away) and check with them whether she could have a lens done. At $3,500 per eye with no guarantee and her advanced age we decided not to go through with it. We then noticed that she was not doing the same things that she used to. We thought she had depression due to her failing eyesight so LOTH asked if we could look at having one eye done to see what would happen. I agreed and we started the tests to see what was happening. Originally it was thought that her liver was failing and that all the toxins were travelling to her brain giving her dementia like symptoms. After a barrage of blood tests her liver turned out to be fine. Then came the shock of the Canine Cognitive Disfunction diagnosis’s. We were shattered. She was still in reasonable health and we thought that we give her a chance. We tried a few different drugs but nothing seemed to work. We did notice a gradual decline in her health and ability to toilet outside. If we were not home when she woke up and she couldn’t find her way outside then she just went to the toilet. Lots of cleaning up has been done on carpet and rugs. We spoke about it last weekend and made the tough decision to give her a week of love, chicken dinners and walks around the block if she was able and then give her, her wings. I made the appointment on Monday for Saturday and boy did it come around quickly. We gave her a breakfast of BBQ chicken and then went to the vets. We were with her at the end and she went peacefully. I feel crushed, shattered and also angry. I was hoping for another 2 or 3 years with her. Her fur brother is 16 1/2 and in reasonable health apart from some arthritis. She got me through some tough times at work and I miss her terribly. I know it will get better but today has been a tough one for both of us.

Please accept my condolences. I had to do the final kindness for my beloved border collie several years ago. Still miss him.

Sorry to read that, Ajkel, I know it's hard losing a pet, my condolences. Hope you and your relatives get through it soon.

Thanks for the lovely kind words, they mean a lot. Sunday morning was almost as difficult as Saturday morning. Got out of bed and walked out to where Daisy has been sleeping/roaming around since she has been sick and she wasn't there. It hit me again. Then all day looking at the empty bed every time I walked inside or sat down to watch something on the TV.

Sorry for your loss, Andrew. Our furry friends leave a big hole when they go.
How is her furry brother coping with it?

Sorry to hear that, friend. I lost my first dog almost the exact same way. Had tears in my eyes as I buried his ashes under an old oak tree in the back yard. It’s never easy.

Very sorry, brother. Heading down this same path soon, I'm afraid. Our boy is almost 14 and has been having seizures.

Just remember, she had a great life and thanks you for every day of it.

Thanks for the kind words. Her fur brother is a little lost. We went for a walk yesterday and he kept looking back at our house when we first left. I usually walked Daisy and Kaye walks Shorty. Because I had no Daisy with me he kept walking behind my feet for some reason and every time I slowed down he nearly finished up with a heel to the jaw. I took two weeks holiday to spend with him as he has never been by himself before. Plus I am not coping that well either.

When I had to put one of my dogs down late last year my other dog was going from room to room for a few days looking for her. They are feel the loss as well, it can be hard to watch but they as we do eventually adjust.
Spending time with Shorty is a great idea for the two of you.
Remember the good times, it helps. Kia kaha (stay strong)

Shorty didn’t eat is breakfast this morning which is unusual. He is very food/treat driven. I did notice last night that he kept heading up the hallway. Maybe he was looking for Daisy.

My deepest sympathies . . . I have posted this before, as it has helped me through the aftermath of this decision.

You have been the best friend he could have asked for, and that is no small thing.
