USPS Rant-I Know, I Know

Evening gents. Before I begin, let me say that I have always sort of given the USPS a break. Honestly, where else can you get something sent across the country for 42c? Well that covers a first class letter but not much else.

My wife went to Virginia for a business trip and she is away without the webcam she uses for keeping in touch with our young daughter whilst she is on such junkets. I told her I would send it priority mail to her hotel. Then I remembered we really didn't like the thing too well. It has poor resolution, does not focus well, etc. It was dirt cheap and it shows. So I went to Best Buy last night and what do you know? They had a number of web cams on sale. One was a HP with 1.3mp resolution, built in microphone, and just right for clipping to a notebook. It was $32.99 on sale and with the $15 rewards coupon I had it dropped the price to $17.99. A right nice savings on something we really did need. Now enters our illustrious post office. We have the automated kiosks available in ours which is convenient since there is normally a line a mile long at the normal service desk and it is always SLOW. I step over to the priority mail packages and stop cold. What the heck is this? A medium priority box at a flat rate of ten dollars and thirty five cents? I don't want this I thought to myself. So I started looking for the "regular" priority boxes. You remember the ones. About 8x8 inches and something like $4.50 for the first pound of weight and usually about $5.00 total with confirmation unless you really get heavy with the package. This was not to be. I couldn't find them because they aren't there to find! At least not in our store. This is crazy. I would have had to pay fifty percent of my purchase price in shipping! I promptly put the thing away and left. I haven't any idea if UPS or FedEx are any better but this is starting to really jaundice my opinion of the USPS. The small box, which would accommodate a medium sized paperback novel was four dollars and change. There was nothing in between it and the medium box which was a bit large for my camera box. This is just silly and in my opinion an attempt to gouge customers. At this rate, the USPS may go bankrupt before Medicare. What a joke. I am no skinflint but I will tell you this little bit of chicanery left me a bit hot around the collar. Is there any decent option?

Regards, Todd

I dont know of any other choices, but i have been turned off buying things from the states just because sometimes the shipping would have cost more then the item itself. I guess I just have to do without.

That and i have ordered things from china and got free shipping. That amazes me.

At my post office, I have found the boxes you seek inside where the line forms. Just cut in and grab one. That, or I have bought 6"x6" boxes at Walmart for $1.50. I don't think FedEx or UPS will have any less expensive alternatives, and they probably don't have free boxes.

If you are referring to the 7 x 7 x 6, I have only been able to order them from USPS and have not seen them in post officies. They cost $4.95 to ship if under 1 lb. I believe.

Mark and Dave. Let me see if I am reading you right. You can still get the cube sized boxes and ship them for the starting price of $4.95 per pound, priority? Yes/no? If you use your own box and mail it priority, is it the same? I guess what I am getting at is whether you are now locked to the $10.35 flat rate for any small priority box? The USPS is a pain these days. BTW, I looked and looked at the P.O. and I could not see the cube sized boxes anywhere. Either behind the folding doors they use to seal off the non automated side of things after normal business hours or in the kiosk area.

I used my own box (cube-sized) today to mail a couple of razors, so well under one pound, and used Priority Mail (2-3 day delivery).

Cost was $4.95 + $0.50 for delivery confirmation.

Not a post office box, not a UPS box, not a FedEx box. Just a plain brown box.

You don't need to buy the USPS boxes to get USPS rates.

USPS: government at its finest.

To our non-US members: how are your services? How is the Royal Mail, the Deutsche Post, etc?

Yes, they have cube shaped boxes that ship at priority rates depending on weight. Any old box will ship at the normal priority rates. If you have a box at home, you can use that. I tend to keep most of the boxes and all of the packing materials from when I get stuff shipped to me, so I usually have one on hand. There are television ads playing now regarding the flat rate boxes. They are a good deal if you have enough items to ship that will fill a box.

I'm actually really annoyed with Canada Post right now. A package I was supposed to recieve from the US got sent to the wrong address - not Canada Post's fault, it was mis-addressed.

Luckily, it was sent to my old address, and I still know people there.

So they took it to the post-office to send to me. $11.

Now, maybe not a bad price to send a package halfway around the country. However, when it was sent to me, it only cost US$2.05 or thereabouts. And then my friend asked how much it would cost to send to the US - about $4.50.

That's right. Somehow, shipping from Ontario to Nova Scotia would cost MORE than shipping to the US, and THEN to Nova Scotia.

Really, ***?

I would hope that no one is buying the boxes. They are free.

+1 The $10.35 Medium Flat Rate Box or the $13.95 Large flat rate boxes in my opinion are better deals when you are shipping something heavier (up to 70 lb.) that will fit in those boxes.

About the flat rate boxes. Sure, I don't have a problem with them for heavier stuff. If you had to ship two or three heavy, hardback books they would be just great. Good idea for consumers actually. I am just annoyed they had NOTHING else out there for an option. To me, they were intentionally driving consumers toward a 50-100 percent more expensive option. I wonder how long the whole thing will last before we see another "crisis" with the U.S. Post?
