What's new

Using old NIB brushes

My dad recently bought a "new in box," supposedly never used, Ever Ready brush on ebay for about $10 and I was wondering what he could expect from it? It looks great... just like a brush you'd buy today but a little more retro. It came in the original packaging and it sure doesn't look like its ever been used. It's supposed to be a bore bristle brush btw.

He's hiding it from SWMBO until Christmas time so he hasn't got to use yet. We're just really curious how well it'll work?

My first brush was a NIB Peerless 500 Pure Badger ... it provided great service from Day 1.

As long as a brush has been kept dry at room temperature, I see no reason why it would not stay "factory fresh" almost indefinitely.

I recently bought a NOS Everyready on Ebay. I love the handle but it will get a new knot. I find the brush is parse and does not hold much lather.

Thanks for the info guys! Replacing the knot is definitely not a problem if it comes to that.. Dad's been wanting to make or restore an old brush anyhow. Hopefully, it won't need it right of the bat though.

They usually work just fine as is. I got a great deal on a couple NOS EverReady 150s earlier this year and used one of them for months, a great experience using an original brush from the old days.

My first brush was an EverReady 500PBT, think it's a silvertip, but anyway so soft I call it my "cashmere". Bought it somewhere between 1968-72, at a drugstore for about $5, still in use, don't think it's lost a hair. Not much of a scrubber, but it makes great lather and releases it beautifully. Used it this AM with an AoS Sandalwood and Real Shaving Co. superlather, looked like Santa in seconds, and plenty for three passes plus. If it really is NOS, it should work like new

I have procured a few NIB Ever Ready brushes and you can tell if they are really new by the hair condition.

As dpm802 state, room temperature and a proper humidity can really help to preserve these brushes.
