Upside down hairs in my new Simpson Duke 2 Best

1000011441.jpg

@Rudy Vey pointed put the upside down trimmed black hairs in my new Simpson.

I just used it and performance seemed alright. It did shed a lot, and it isn't as soft as I expected it to be.

Other than scritch and shedding, is there anything else I should expect here?

It makes sense intuitively, that backwards hairs, with scales and taper pointing into the knot, might tend to fall out, draw lather and moisture down into the knot, and split or break.

Is that about right?

Issues with quality control and shedding sound par for the course with Simpson. This well-established company seems to have taken a dive in recent years. Sad because I've read about how great their brushes used to be

I have several Simpson brushes and I enjoy them very much, the Best grade can be excellent and is my favourite after Manchurian. There can be huge variances in all Simpson knots, for example two Duke 2 Best knots could be very different, one could be closer to Pure grade, which I prefer, and another could be closer to Super grade, which I do not personally favour; I would probably enjoy your specific knot. Additionally the two knots could be set such that one has a much higher loft than the other, resulting in two very different Duke 2 brushes. To some these variances are part of the charm of Simpson - the appeal of a knot which it is 'claimed' is hand tied, and set in house. To others, myself included, it shows a lack of quality control that makes buying a Simpson brush a complete lottery. I have sold as many Simpson brushes as I still own, sometimes trying several of the same model until I find one I like. I would now no longer purchase a Simpson brush unless I could personally inspect the exact brush in advance. I also favour Semogue Finest brushes, none of mine have ever shed and their consistency and quality control has been flawless in complete contrast to Simpson. Simpson claim that some initial hair loss is normal for the first few uses but that it should settle down. I would give it ten shaves at most and then return the brush if the shedding has not stopped. Good luck 👍

I've got one that someone said the same thing about it, the few dark hairs.
I don't worry about it and I hope you don't either. I use mine, it's fine.
They do usually tend to lose a few hairs when new, that will settle down.

Purchased in 2021 or 2022, I use it quite often because I like it. Enjoy your new brush.

Awesome. Thanks for the reassurance.

It's already looking a little better.

@Marco The Duke 2 in Best is here. The knot seems to suit me pretty well. It is a contender for my favorite brush, but I need some more time with it so say for sure.

Thank you for the recommendation. I am glad I took your advice on the size, model, and knot.

Yeah, I got one of those as well.
Mine is a Commodore X1, and it is my favorite travel brush. After many uses, its behavior changed from scritch to healthy scrub.

My advice to any owner of such beast?

Did company change ownership, or just start ignoring quality control?

+1! Variability is ‘part of Simpsons charm,’ or ‘rolling the dice.’ How you value this characteristic is key IMO!!

Almost all of my badger brushes are scrubbier pure or black, but the Simpson Best is actually pretty close to my TRC Manchurian Silvertip. My Yaqi 2-band and Silvertip, on the other hand, only have a couple black tips in the entire knot.

Best is only one step above the bottom in the Simpson lineup. You can only ask so much.

I had noticed on my own, a difference in white hairs in my black knots.

Boti super high density black badger knot is cleaner than the two DSC knots.
