Something wrong with the bear. Sick. Hurt. Rabid. Not usual at all.
She's a keeper. Teach her how to load, though.
If you have a gun around the house, it makes sense that everyone should take some time to know how to use it. Or even just make a point of using it recreationally at least once a year.
In this case though, I wonder of her not knowing how to load the gun may have been a good thing. If all she was planning to do was fire a few shots into the air to scare the bear away, that would have been safe enough. But, if she envisioned loading the gun and shooting at the bear from 20 yards away while it is mauling her husband, the situation may have turned out pretty badly....

For Bear defense (if there were any bears and/or reports of bears around here), my weapon of choice (and the Mrs. too [she was also in the Army]), would be my 'good ole trusty' (Army issue type), pump action, 8 round (+one
in the chamber), 12 gauge Mossberg M590

They often get in trouble and when you mix in dogs and (probably) inexperienced people you end up with a mess.
We get them all here, black bears, grizzlies and cougars, and they all come down looking for one thing: FOOD.
I bet the lab tests will come back negative.
