About a year ago, Leisureguy posted a thread in which he encouraged people to try new blades, because they might find a new favorite. I was somewhat critical of his suggestion, because I felt that, once I'd found a blade I liked, searching for a better one could cause me to have some uncomfortable shaves in the process.
Now, I find myself advocating his position, but with shaving soaps. We all have our favorite glycerin, triple-milled and tallow soaps and I see posts and reviews of the same soaps over and over again. (By the way, I have used just about all of the "popular" soaps on B&B such as Blenheim Bouquet, C&E, T&H, Mama Bear, L'Occitaine CADE, MWF, Joris and Tabac.
A few weeks ago, I was in Juneau Alaska and found a small soap shop called Glacier Smoothie Soap Company. They sold a product called "Shave Cakes" in a glass jar of four cakes for $11. Given the small size of the investment, I bought a jar and it has turned out to be the best shaving product I have ever used. (See my review of Glacier Smoothie in the Review section.) Moral of the story is "Don't be afraid to try a soap you have never heard of and which hasn't been discussed on B&B or elsewhere." You may find a real winner and the worst thing that can happen is that you use it for bath soap.
My favorite glycerin soap is Papillon, a soap I reviewed on 1-3-2008. It is another "offbeat" soap.
Some good news for me is that I have begun to see more reviews of offbeat or new soaps. Keep them coming!!
