Truefutt & Hill line - smells like?

I visited one of the Truefitt & Hill shops not long ago to sample some new scents. I was really looking to get away from the typical department store scents and try something a little more barber shoppy. I loved Grafton right from the start and eventually left with it, but while sampling each of T&H's I couldn't help but feel that three of them in particular smelled very similar to some popular department store offerings that I've used over the years. Generally speaking, has anybody detected a similarity or resemblance between the following scents?:

1805 - Aqua Di Gio
Clubman - Eternity
Freshman - Coolwater (one that seems to be obvious to many)

T&H Spanish Leather is wonderful and doesn't smell like anything you are going to find in a department store. Which is too bad because it would make the department stores worthwhile going to.

You should have smelled it before they reformulated it. It was grand. It smells a little synthetic now. Nevertheless, I still like it.

Synthetic, mainstream, corporate cost cutting. One Briton referred to it as "American".

Well it's worth a sampling. They are quality but just not original.

Got mine "used" off the b/s/t. Do not know what formulation it is, but it does smell great to me. Close to Trumper's but with less leather and more spice. Am replacing it with TOBS Sandalwood; also very nice and less expensive.

Go to the cologne counter and ask for a sample of Channel Allure. IMO smells just like T&H Spanish Leather.

That said, I still like the SL followed by Trafalgar which is my favorite of the T&H line as it is the only one I smell and don't immediately think of something else, i.e. Freshman smelling like Coolwater, etc.

For Clubman, I think Polo Sport.

I used to like Grafton fairly well until a buddy told me it smelled like Jerry Curl which completely ruined it for me, because that's all I can smell when I sample it now :(

YMMV.

In all seriousness there are similarities to be found between many manufacturers. I mean, if you think about it everyone is going to try and offer/sell whatever is popular.

That's interesting that you say this. I don't remember exactly what I thought of Trafalgar when I was sampling it. Maybe that is a good thing? I'm going to head back to the store at some point and re-try Trafalgar for good measure.

And while I'm there I'll be sure to check out Spanish Leather again. This seems to be an immensely popular scent, but I remember it being entirely too "manly" smelling for my tastes. But this could have also been because I hadn't yet experienced fougere or gentlemanly styles of scents before I started to dabble in the world of straight razor shaving.

I am a big big fan of the Trafalgar. I do like the Spanish Leather as well, especially as a fall/winter fragrance, but IMO it does lack the uniqueness of the Trafalgar. I've also heard some say they think it smells like Opium.

It's been years since I smelled Opium, but maybe it does.

T&H Trafalgar is a mans scent. As for spanish leather it's not for me and I have sniffed them all in the last couple of days.

I still really like Grafton. I would not care if it smelled like Jheri Curl, although I am not sure that it does.

"Member when you had a jheri curl didn't quite learn
On the block, with ya glock, trippin off sherm
Collect calls to the till, sayin how ya changed
Oh you a Muslim now, no more dope game"

Trafalgar is easily the best scent I have ever tried in my short foray into colognes. I love it!

Is Jheri Curl a scent? All I get from the googles is a hairstyle.
