Truefitt and Hill

I've been considering trying a Truefitt and Hill soap bowl for a while - 1805, in fact. But I don't really know how well the soaps actually perform, so I'm hoping some of you who use them can tell me what they're like. My reference for English soaps is DR Harris, whose soaps are excellent, so any comparison with those would be especially appreciated.

I certainly rate Harris soaps in front of T&H, although I haven't used a Truefitt soap in quite a while.

The ones I have are hard to load but once you get enough they make a fine lather. Count on double the loading time (or more) to get enough soap in your brush.

My favorite English shave soap is Mitchell's Wool Fat.

That's kind of what I was expecting to hear, thanks.

That's interesting, thanks - I wouldn't mind a bit more effort if the resulting lather is good enough. MWF is also one of my favourites - how would you compare the lather quality of T&H with that?

I've also contemplated buying the T&H soap and I also consider D.R. Harris to be my favorite soap, so I'll be keeping up with this post.

I bought a T&H sandalwood refill at a local barber shop and I like it just fine. Its a bit over priced, but a great performer. YMMV

I bought the 1805 soap and I own a few DR Harris, so I will contribute this: There is no comparison between the two brands. Every one of the DRH soaps I own (Arlington, Lavender, Windsor) can build an outstanding lather quickly and consistently.

Unfortunately, the T&H 1805 isnt in the same league. The scent is a toned down version of the cream, so it is a winner, but the lather required work. You can build a slick usable lather, but it will be slightly thin. I found that wetting the top of the puck with hot water and letting it sit while I shower is a requirement; once that is done you have to "load it like you hate it".

It worked when I used a firm brush (my Vie Long horse or D01 2-Band) or a very dense brush (QED Select) to load enough soap in a reasonable time for my morning shave. In the end, I removed it from my daily rotation and it sits in a closet along with my Trumpers Rose soap (a soul mate to T&H; excellent scent, but laborious to lather).

I don't like their presentation on the soaps, looks quite plain. I do have the 1805 cream in a tub. The black and gold pattern is classic, and it performers well.

I have Trumper's Rose and Violets sitting with T&H Luxury. It'll be a little while before I pull them out. I think they lather equally. I can't say Harris Arlington was head and shoulders above those 3.

I actually prefer the T&H Luxury to their other scents. The 1805 soap is hard like steel so takes a lot iof work to load, even with a Boar Brush...Harris Lavender on the other hand is a pleasure to load and is ready to shave in just moments compared to minutes for T&H. For me the TOBS Jermyn was the best buy for lather ratio...slick gooey lather in just a few swirls and a nice Lavenderish lemon scent to go along with it. I use my Boars for this soap and it produces excellent lather.

It depends on your skin type if will work for you. No doubt it lathers great and smells great. It cut too fast and thin for me though = irritation so I dumped it. That was one expensive bath soap.

Thanks for all the thoughts, folks - it's sounding like a T&H soap wouldn't be a good purchase for me, as I like a really creamy lather.
