Tried to Buy Overseas Vendor Brush, Transaction flagged as Fraud - Credit Card Frozen

Has anyone else had a similar experience. I tried to buy a brush using their online website from Cannaught Shaving (in Britain). My MasterCard Credit card transaction was denied by my credit card company and my card was frozen for "Fradulent Activity". They have canceled my card and will re-issue me another with a different card number. I went directly to their website, it was what it was supposed to be - not a fraud site. I have bought a number of items from overseas - all with pretty good experiences - until today. The credit card company tells me they flagged the transaction because it was coming from outside the US

Yup, happens sometimes - usually when you're overseas and go to make a purchase and the system flags it as a potential fraud.
The solution is to tell your cc company ahead of time that you're going to make overseas purchases, they'll put a note on your file and let them go through.

+1. Best to let your cc company know about transactions like that ahead of time.

Yes, but this is a different case; the OP just is in his country, and buys something from a legimitate webshop in another country.

That is a pattern that happens all the time. No reason for MasterCard to suspect fraud there.

Overseas?? You mean we, on this side of the pond, are thiefs, beggars, and frauds, according to MasterCard USA?

I guess it was a combination of things that triggered MasterCard, e.g. ordering from Asia, Europe, and the USA within a given time period (hours?)

Never had any issues with buying from Connaught in Australia on my Aussie bank issued MasterCard or Visa previously.

I've been contacted once before and had a card blocked after the call following unauthorised transactions in the US and Canada three weeks after a trip to NYC. That was the time I LIKED my bank!

I bought from Connaught couple of weeks ago without an issue and paid by CC. Guess it depends on your CC company. As others have suggested just try Paypal.

The wife had the same thing happen when trying to subscribe to an English magazine. The cc company told her the pattern is purchases from the U. S. To England.

Why specifically to the UK? I can't think of anything in the news lately that would flag transactions between the UK and the rest of the world as unreliable.

I mainly use paypal because it adds one more layer of security as well as I dont need to worry if the merchant implemented the secure checkout properly.
If something goes wrong i can call paypal and the cc company.
In fact, I avoid using my credit card directly. If a merchant does not accept payapl, I take my business elsewhere, especially for out of country websites.

I have a MC with Citi and an Amex; my daughter, who is living overseas, has cards on both of these accounts. I've been contacted by both companies' fraud prevention teams at various times to check if the activity is legitimate. Neither has frozen or had to re-issue a card. The most they've done is to hold up a large charge until they reach me. I often travel out of the country as well and usually advise Amex in advance to avoid problems (and have never had one). Moreover, I've purchased products from a significant number of foreign vendors (including Connaught) and never had a problem. I know there is additional scrutiny on jurisdictions that are flagged for money laundering or centers of illicit trade but of course the UK is nether of those.

I have no idea if it's true, but the credit card company said they had had a rash of fraudulent activity where purchases were being made made from English sites. IIRC, they said it there was more fraudulent activity with English sites lately than anywhere else. Kinda surprised me. That was about three or four months ago, no longer.

Dang, they cancelled your card?! Usually, I just have to call and talk to someone from security to verify that the transaction was valid.

They freeze cards for the most random transactions sometimes. I've had my card flagged for buying a couple $1 apps and a book through the iTunes Store.

I've never actually had a card cancelled though. That doesn't make any sense. I've had my card flagged 3 times now, and each time I just had to call card services, confirm that I made the transactions, and they reactivate it right away. Sorry that happened to you. What a hassle.

I would have suspected Russian sites, but not English ones. Not implying that Russians are less honest, but the size of the country and lack of controls give more opportunities for fraud, I think.
