Traveling with a SE

So I recently picked up a g-bar and as the handle isn't removable and I don't have the original case I was curious if any of you have traveling tips in terms of makeshift cases and/or general packing. In fact, any packing/travel tips for a DE, shave soap, blades, etc. would be helpful since this will be my first trip since having picked up wet shaving. Thanks all.

It's a frequent suggestion, but a travel soap dish like this will hold a lot of different types of razor. The link is just to show what I'm talking about; you can find them in places like KMarts, drug stores, and grocery stores. I have one that I've had for years, and I verified that my G-Bar and a 10 pack of Gem blades will fit in there, but you'd want to fill in the chinks with something soft to keep it from rattling.

Of course, you know about no blades in airplane carry on luggage. Check the bag, mail the blades ahead, or buy them when you get there.

I use a plastic soap dish bought at Walmart all the time. Cost about a buck or so. A mens toiletry case works great. You can also buy a very inexpensive travel tube for your brush. They are usually vented on both ends. For my razor I have been using a cloth pouch which has a string that snugs down. I was thinking for the future using a very small digital camera case just for a razor and packet of blades. There are endless solutions to protecting shaving items.

No need to be a cheap charlie...there are plenty of Gems on the Bay which have cases. The price is right and, while I do not have a G-bar, I have several of the guiding Eyes and Micromatics, all of which fit in any Gem box I have. My personal favorites are the red/black cases and the Mahoganites.

Come on...be a little classy here.:thumbup1:

Check the wiki page on air travel for additional hints and tips.

I just use a Dopp bag for all my shaving gear while on travel. Just make sure you pack the blades in your checked luggage, otherwise they'll be forcibly removed by the TSA (I speak from experience).

To go on the "high road" as described above, this case looks very cool to me (haven't ordered one yet, but I plan to ETA: Just ordered!). And as for brushes, while some make their tubes out of a prescription bottle, I have a travel brush from C&E (not sure they have it any more, but it was made by Edwin Jagger, who have several choices for travel brushes with tubes). I used the brush for a couple of weeks to break it in and kill that "new badger" smell. And I bought this bowl from Edwin Jagger (got it on eBay).

For soaps, you can carry on creams up to 2.5 oz. Erasmic and C.O. Bigelow & Co (which is a re-branded Proraso sold at Bath & Body Works) make 2.5 oz. tubes (larder than you'd think). And soap pucks are fine for travel, I have a small one in a metal tin from NanaJune69 on eBay, and plan to get a travel sized plastic housed one from Edwin Jagger.

I do carry the Gillette Travel Tech in the little case, but ultimately will travel with multiple razors, as I still crave variety. I use all the above for carry on, will pack the blades in factory box or vintage Gillette blade box in checked baggage (and tape to secure them so they don't work free and cut a TSA agent!). That way, in the even of a lost bag, worst case is I'll need to find blades locally, then can still have a nice shave!.

Often a clamshell style glasses case with a little tissue paper for cushioning stuffed in will work well.

One of the hazards of being a wetshaving nut is the amount of stuff you have to fit into a wetpack when travelling. I picked up a pack at a discount pharmacist which is enormous. big enough to hold razor, preshave oil, cream, alum, witch hazel, 3 or 4 cologne bottles as well as my toothbrush/paste, hairbrush, deodorant etc. It has several compartments and actually zips up to a reasonable size so it fits in my luggage.
