Tradere - Machining

Has anyone else noticed that the inside of the head (and the blade) stay pretty much competely dry after using their Tradere?

I've been using mine for the past two weeks and I keep opening up the razor after shaving and I find I don't have to dry anything - everything stays dry, the machining seems to be that good.

Is that the experience others are having as well?

I know that with stainless one doesn't have to dry anything anyway, and in fact that's the case with chrome plated or nickle plated razors as well, but from time to time I do open up my razors to see what's going on and I was very pleasantly surprised to see how dry the Tradere remains after a shave.

I shaved with mine about three hours ago. When I took it apart for cleaning and storage, I believe that it was dry.

I haven't really noticed, cause usually the first thing I do when I pull the razor apart is rinse off each piece.

Usually when I finish shaving I loosen the top and rinse out all of the stubble and lather so I had just continued theis practice and had not looked at the Tradere. I will have to have a look now.

I suspect you'll find that by doing that you're getting water into the threads of the screw that would otherwise remain perfectly dry.

I've gotten into the habit with mine to just rinse it under hot water, without loosening the head. It seems to me that the blade edge gets washed out just fine and when I later open the razor completely, the inside of the handle and the inside of the head are pretty much completely dry.

I may be wrong, but I think that my Tradere is the only razor that's like this.

I looked under the cap immediately after shaving this morning, and it was mostly dry in there, but I would wager that is less about water not getting in, and more about the fact that water doesn't really stick to stainless steel super well. It gets in there, it just doesn't really stay in there.

Good question I don't know whether stainless deflects water better than say nickle, blades are stainless and with other razors generally my blades are all wet, with my Tradere they're not.

Not so much the metal as the finish. You'll see that water tends to bead and roll off any metal with a high-polish finish on it. My thought is this may be the reason they polished the head, even though they didn't polish the handle. I'm sending mine off to Dave in California to nickel-plate the whole thing to improve the corrosion-resistance and bling factor, and even as I'm typing this, I feel myself slipping toward rhodium.

I somehow can't imagine that nickle is more corrosion resistant than stainless, but I'm no expert. I would be interesting to see one plated in rhodium though. Make sure to post some pics - you'll get lots of interest.

Oh, I will. I'll be plating a Feather, Tradere, and an Ikon OSS. It'll take a few weeks, but I'll share the results.

You may be right, but every three days when I change blades I gently clean all surfaces with a soft toothbrush, dry and then oil all threads before putting it away. I've been working with tools & equipment in difficult, wet and sometimes salty environments for over 40 years and feel pretty comfortable that that little bit of water three mornings in a row before being field stripped and oiled won't have too much impact on a Tradere.

Oh, and about the corrosion resistance, its the chromium and nickel in the stainless alloy that make it corrosion resistant.

Note that the Feather AS-D1 is already chrome plated over the stainless. I have a Feather and a Tradere. I think the Tradere's finish is as shiny as my Merkur Progress with the Chrome plating. (I assume it is chrome)

Yeah, but it's a matte finish that I've never liked. I think it would look better with a gloss finish. And only the head is glossy on the Tradere. If the handle had the same finish as the head, I'd love it. In fact, I'd just have the handle plated but I'm afraid it wouldn't match the head. The finish on the Ikon matches the Feather, I don't like either one. Fabulous detail on all three razors and I think they all would look better with a high polish finish.

You could put a high polish on the Tradere handle with a buffing wheel and compound. I would not do it on the Feather though, because you would probably go through the plating.

Not a bad idea. Wouldn't cost anything to get the old Dremel out and some compound and see what happens. Worst case, I was going to plate it anyway.

Wow i didnt know that. Will they still be shavable after the plating is gone ?

I cannot wait to see that. If you are using Dave from West Coast, he does a great job. For the few dollars more, I'd go with the Rhodium, but it is easy to spend someone else's money from my recliner :001_tongu

Post tons of pics once you get it back.
