Top end safety razors

What are some of the top end new safety razors.

I'm aware of Merkur, Muehle, EJ, Parker and Feather. Are there other companies that are still making good quality safety razors?

You also have Pils from Germany making high end stainless steel razors. Those go for about $300 delivered to the US. Of course you have iKon all stainless steel out of Thailand. There are 4 new razors coming shortly according to the owner. Claims they will be in the area of $58 + shipping. And finally you have the American made Classic Cobra $125 + shipping from Classic Shaving. They use only Feather Professional blades which are suppose to be very sharp and single edge like an injector blade.

You also have Joris who sells open comb razors, they cost an arm.
The Pils is really a great shaver , and cost even more.

Cooncatbob - Bob's Razor Works...
Bull Mastiff handles with replated heads.

I might do a Pils for my birthday this year or take some pills to order a Pils.

I don't think I would include Parker in the same group as Merkur, and Muhle. While they have improved their product (past production had serious quality control problems), I still don't consider them to be top of the line. :001_smile

I'm not sure I would include every model of Merkur either.

Can anybody attest to the new EJ head being vastly superior to the Merkur head? They look very similar. If there is a difference, are people putting it down more to design or quality control?

I fully agree with you. :thumbup1:

COUGH...merkur vision...total piece of crappolla...COUGH. :laugh::laugh:

Several people who own both have indicated the EJ/ Muhle heads have a superior finish, superior balance, and provide a superior shave. The heads may look similiar, but the EJ/ Muhle is of Muhle's own design, and is not made by Merkur.

I own a Muhle R-89 and can attest that it is in my opinion the best current production razor currently being sold on the market**. It's a example of fine craftsmanship that has a perfect finish, superb balance, and provides for a wonderful shave.

**Cooncatbob's wonderful craftsmanship is on par with Muhle, but his creations are a mix of new/ vintage items.

Here is some info on the Edwin Jagger DE89L from Best Grooming Tools site:

"The Edwin Jagger Double Edge Safety Razors have a completely new 2 part head fixture that took Neil Jagger over six months to design and approve tooling before allowing the Edwin Jagger name to be stamped into the metal collar just below the blade fittings. The head fixtures on these double edge razors are not the same as Merkur heads found on most all of the other quality double edge razors.
The English chrome plating from Sheffield is superior to any other manufacturer.

These Edwin Jagger Safety Razors are handcrafted and go through a special hard chrome process that is a beautiful and distinct "blue chrome" used by Rolls Royce. The chrome is truly distinctive when compared to the normal chrome we're all used to seeing. All Edwin Jagger razors and shaving brushes have superior fit, finish and quality not found in other brands."

I have one and it is a terrific razor. The fit and finish far exceed any other mass produced razor I own. And with an Iridium blade it always gives me excellent results.

*VASTLY*? I can't answer that, but superior yes, I think.
On my face my 89L draws more smoothly than my 34C, especially with a feather.
Like many items/issues discussed here it often comes down to personal preference and experience with your technique.

I have a Chatsworth that was supposed to have the Muhle head. It was inadvertantly shipped with the older Merkur head. When I contacted the vendor (Fendrihans), they were very good about it and promptly shipped me a new Muhle head. Very good customer service.
At any rate, I had the oppurtunity to compare the two heads, on the same razor. To me, The Muhle head is clearly superior in both design and quality. It shaves smoother and looks nicer. The Merkur head had visible molding lines and a few small areas where it was not completely filled out. The blade gap was a little higher at one end, just on one side.
For my money, the Muhle is a better product all the way around.

The new EJ/Muhle heads are fantastic. I suppose the best of both worlds might be to get one of those heads and have cooncatbob make a custom handle for it.
