TOBS Sandalwood Cream Lather Problems

I recently bought some Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Cream. I've been shaving with it for a little while but I'm having a hard time. The past couple of days I have gotten some irritation. When I lather it in a bowl it whips up pretty quick (about 1 min). When I apply the lather to my wet face I leave it on for a while and I start getting a light stingy feeling. When I try shaving with my Merkur Progress (setting between 1.5 - 2.0) I can feel that it is not shaving smoothly. It feels like the lather is drying out my skin...but the lather doesn't look dry (looks like Cool Whip).

This morning I had to rinse it off and finish with HeadBlade HeadSlick shave cream which works perfect (with NO irritation).

Any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Anyone else have this problem when they started using TOBS?

Perhaps you are being irritated by the Sandalwood scented oils, or whatever it is that Taylor's uses. I get that occasionally with Bond Street almond if I scrub too hard with my face wash in the shower.

Do you shave after you shower/use an exfoliating face scrub?

First of all, thanks for your avatar - very nice!

I use TOBS Sandalwood and a few other creams of this brand and never had a reaction. The only cream I had a reaction to was Musgo Real. It could be that you are showing a reaction to one of the ingredients, and it could be the Sandalwood ingredient. I gladly sent you some small samples of other sandalwood creams or another Taylor cream (Rose, Mr Taylor) send me a pm with your info.

Yes I shave after I shower, but I don't use an exfoliating face scrub. I heard that TOBS was moisturizing...but not for me. Not sure whats up. Should I add more water to my lather?

I agree with Rudy - nice avatar! Looks like you're sneaking up behind Maher in the competition for the "best avatar" honor! (pun intended:rolleyes:)

I also agree with Rudy that it sounds like you may not be doing anything wrong and there may be no problem with the cream, you may just be having a sensitivity reaction to the Sandlewood ingredients. I have similar sensitivities, and get the same burning reaction shortly after I apply offending lathers, or aftershave balms. I've had to just figure out which ones caused the problem and move on. There are lots of other shaving creams and soaps to choose from to find some that work for you. It's sad leaving behind ones that you want to use because you like the scent, or the lather quality, etc, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Good luck!

Thanks I appreciate that. I was going to get the Rose before I got the Sandalwood. We'll see how it plays out.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I should just stick to what works. It's sucks that I won't be able to try out new stuff:scared:. But I really like the HeadBlade HeadSlick Shave cream...so it's cool.

Don't limit yourself too quickly. There are a lot of shaving creams/soaps that will likely not cause you problems. You should continue experimenting, and Rudy's very kind offer of samples is a good way to start the process. There are a lot of other places you can get samples free, and if you're like me, a little burning now and then is a small price to pay to find new shaving creams that you can enjoy without a bad reaction.

Just started using TOBS sandalwood cream from the new tub I purchased. While it doesn't cause a skin reaction on me, the scent is STRONG, which is why I wanted it. Agree that your reaction could indeed be because of the aromatics used in it. A much milder sandalwood cream would be C&E, which has a light, soapy aroma.

Greetings from Columbus Ohio

what avatar? I will change mine when I am back home ... nice one though

I have a smiliar reaction to TOBS Almond cream. My face stings a bit before the razor even gets to the face. I am trying to go through the ingredient list to see if there is anything that might trigger that with me. I am wondering if the acids in the cream just don't give well with me.

Yep...that's what I get. The sting feels like my skins is irritated.

it's gotta be somethingin the creams. I started using a soap, in this case Tabac, for a week and haven't had any irritation at all. It is kind of a bummer because I really like the smell of the almond cream.

Do you use soaps? Maybe their sandalwood soap might be an alternative.

I tried Col. Conk Almond soap and Van Der Hagen soap...didn't feel there was much protection...it took a while to get a proper lather.

I'll try a different soap and see how it feels.

so despite all the compliments, you haven't expanded at all on your avatar (unless i missed it)! who is this wonderful woman? is this your significant other or spouse? or just a nice internet find? from one assman to another, inquiring minds need to know! (i hope this was not too crude or ungentlemanly).
