Just got TOBS Grapefruit for me and my girlfriend to share. Both of us used it today. She really liked it and here is my review...
I am posting this review as a guy with a very thick beard with sensitive skin. So for those who are still new to de shaving or have had problems with razor burn in the past.. I hope this helps you in your quest for better shaves.
I started out de shaving with TOBS Sandalwood and TOBS Avocado. I thoroughly enjoyed both creams and got some great shaves with them. From there I have moved onto Castle Forbes Lavender, Castle Forbes Lime, and AOS Sandalwood (Which all occupy my shave den right now along with Truefitt and Hill Ultimate comfort which I am yet to open.)
My first impression of this cream was "Wow that smells great." Just like Castle Forbes Lime, you have to remind yourself that its not edible. (However I'm confident it wouldn't taste as well as it smells but it sure smells delicious). Almost like a fresh cut grapefruit with a tad bit of tangerine added to the mix.
Shaving goods included the TOBS Grapefruit, Muhle R41, new Gillette 7 Oclock Black, Muhle M89 Silvertip Badger, AOS Lemon Preshave oil, and Speick Aftershave. Doing a cold water soak and shave, I opened up the tub of cream and took my brush out of the cold water. Reached in for an almond size dollop of cream and realized very quickly that this is the lightest cream I have ever used. My finger sunk right into the cream like water. Much lighter then TOBS creams I have used in the past. This worried me cause I tend to like creams that offer great protection. Nonetheless I proceeded to load it into the brush and began to face lather. To its credit, it was one of the easiest creams to lather that I have ever used. Seriously expanded all over my face and got better with each pass. The sent became even more intoxicating as the cream expanded. (In a good way)
As for the shave, it is not as slick and comfortable as either CF creams or even the AOS cream. However, you could tell that it was shaving close, mighty close. I did WTG, XTG, ATG passes. Left with one nick, (my fault) and just a tad bit of redness that was taken care of by some Witch Hazel and Speick Aftershave. But what was left was a BBS face. Mighty Mighty close. As I remember, this TOBS cream left my face super smooth without a greasy feel as the other TOBS creams I have used in the past.
All in all I am satisfied with the shave and would buy another tub. Would I say its the best? Certainly not. Top 3? Nope. But respectfully it is a solid cream. In fact, I can go as far as saying that I would look forward to using this cream again. Grade? B+. 88%.
I hope this was helpful to those out there thinking about using it. Especially those newbies. Its amazing the comfort of shaving and not having to deal with unsightly razor burn and razor bumps. I would recommend TOBS Grapefruit to anyone without super sensitive skin, and those looking for a citrusy summer cream.
