What's new

Time for expansion.

Ok, so I have a Fine nib pen, a medium, medium stub & medium italic. I'm looking to expand to something huge and showy, like a 1.1 stub ( This picture by syngent got me hooked on the thought ). It doesn't have to be that exact thing, just something that I can use for huge, showy lettering. I've got cheap pens ( Under $20 each ) and 2 Franklin Christoph #27's.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a pen that either comes with a similar nib or can, for a slightly higher price, have a custom nib ordered/ground? My total budget for this would be $70 - $80, not including ink ( I'm also up for recommendations on that ). I can spend a bit more, but not much.

While I really like my Franklin-Christoph pens, I'd like to branch out and get something from a different maker.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Brian, the TWSBI Mini and Vac700 do come in 1.1 and 1.5
Also Lamy are avaliable in 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9

I have to tell you that I really like both the Lamy 1.1 and the TWSBI 1.1 that Andy suggested (sorry Brian). If you bought a Safari with the 1.1 and a converter, you would come in well under your Budget. If you went up to a Studio with a 1.1, to get something nicer than a Safari, they have some right in your price range.

In the amount of money you are looking to spend, I do not think you will be able to buy a pen, and have a custom grind. You will have to look for stock stubs/italics.

Printing is just me taking my time and keeping it simple... the cursive hand writing like the goth script only took a day or two to get okay... and a few weeks to get really good though I still practice to get it all the way I can snap a pick of the page I learned the letters from see if others out there want to learn that too

That would be awesome! If you could either post it here, somewhere on the forum or via PM, that would be great!

You could try a BB Stub Pilot for under $20 with a converter if you don't want to go big all at once. I imagine you will like the nib so going bigger for a LAMY or TWSBI should work...

Sorry Brian, I don't like either pen either.

What about a Music nib?

I'm honestly just looking for something big & showy... not sure what a music nib is like, but it might work? ( googling now )

When i get home ill open a thread on the matter, would be cool to get some other people and the pics of their progress into a place too

although i have never had a music nib I am certain they may not give you what you are looking for, i believe you are after line variation and i dont think they will do so at the degree you are after, but hot damn they look cool and have had my eye for a long long time (the couple of months back i foolishly came into the nib)

"What is your second least favorite pen, behind Hero?"

I guess it would have to be Lamy. IMHO uninspired and I feel for the money better more interesting pens out there. Now alot of people will say I am all wet and don't know crap. and they are probably correct.

The Lamy series does write well and many people love them.

For me I just can't justify writing with a new production Lamy, Twisbi, Hero, when this is still out there;.

I really need to get me one... There was a '51 that ended 10 minutes after my EMT class & I didn't have time to bid on it before class started... the instant class ended, we had a call & I was on the highway for 2 hours. Ended with 1 bid at the minimum ( $50 ). Damn.

I really do like the looks of those too.

I find it hard to believe that anything could beat a Lamy italic, but I am open to persuasion.
