Aurora Piston filler - resurrection possible?

Quick update and once again many thanks for all the help.

Getting the nib out and working with cotton swabs and tweezers improved the situation a good bit. I also watched a vid by Goulet Pens on how to check for misalignments with a loupe.

Aside from the slit between the tines not starting dead center from the hole and the slit itself narrowing from that start to the very tip I found nothing obvious. Could those two things be the issue?

Anyway the remaining bottle of Noodler‘s was binned and I’m awaiting now the delivery of the Waterman Serenity to fill up and give it a go.

I also ordered in the meantime that Platinum from further up the thread :) I know it looks a bit gaudy but I have enough serious looking pens…

this is the first series of Aurora 88 Big. It has long tines. Later models had shorter ones. Nice pen. Users say the nib is pretty flexible but I wouldn't know with short tines 😊
The feed should also be ebonite. Misalignment between breather hole and slit isn't an issue. If the tines are too close on the tip then the pen will not write properly. You could get the tips further apart a tiny bit to improve ink flow but if you take it to the shop mentioned in previous posts they can definitely help you. Happy New Year and 2025 of Aurora 88 Big enjoyment

I will give it a go with the Waterman ink and I have some Celluloid ready. If this doesn’t help then I will go to the shop.

@blethenstrom instead of swamping the Acquisition thread I’ll use this one for the Platinum as well.

Not sure if something can be gleaned from the pics. I will clean it with water and syringe today and look if this changes something.

The nib looks fine in those pictures too me. You said you are having hard starts? Have you tried to flush it with pen flush? Which ink are you trying to run in it?

I have received some pen flush but haven’t used it yet and will first try water. Ink is an original Platinum blue-black cartridge.
Sounds good. It is a new pen right? If so there could be some residue in the pen left from the manufacturing of it that might cause obstruction as well. Flushing it with water and/or pen flush should help that.

Flushing was easy (water and air). I have put the cartridge back and will try it a bit later.

Hannes, can you post a photo of the nib head on? So the alignment of the tines is clear, eg: UU
My phone can’t pick up the point but as I had it in hand my stupid self started again messing with it and now its worse or wrecked. Totally my fault but I guess it now has to go to a Pro to see what can be done :mad2:

What really gets me is that my 5 Dollar Preppy grocery lists pen naturally writes like nobodies business….

18k gold is soft, so that's an easy fix it you are willing to attempt it yourself. You want the tines in contact with the feed along the full length of the feed.

Flip the pen over, and keeping the angle constant, level with the feed, gently press the nib down onto a soft surface, like a paper pad. Go slow and check progress frequently. Once you have full contract, check the tines from head on to make sure they are perfectly level.

Or, just send it to a pro if you don't feel confident about not making it worse. Good luck!

This far in the game I will try anything. I just will let it rest for a couple of days before going to work.

Many thanks for your support to this slightly maddening situation.
