Tie Knots

Half-Windsor sometimes, most of the time Four-in-Hand.

I think full Windsors are a little showey. I have one wide collar shirt that I'll wear that big knot with sometimes, but that's about it. Wide collar white shirt, burgundy full Windsor tie, dark grey suit.

I hear often of how great the Shelby/Pratt is, but I never took the time to learn it.

I am actually surprised to hear from anyone who has ever heard of the Shelby.

I use someting like a Double Windsor but I tie it wrong so I call it my own.

When I wear a tie (not often) it is the four-in-hand. I hate the huge knots that some create (such as the Windsor)... Just don't like the look personally.

Also, I've tried tying a Windsor before... Every time I finished the tie ended about 1/2 way between my collar and the top of my pants. I REALLY hate the look created when people wear a tie that just barely goes to their stomach... looks sloppy IMO.

Half Windsor

Anyone like to post any pictures of different knot styles so we can see how they compare/contrast with one another?

I use the hand-in-four for long ties or a bow tie. I occasionally get odd stares and a few dumb jokes when I wear a bow tie, but Humphrey Bogart liked to wear one, so that is good enough for me.

half-windsor... i'm 6'4 with a REALLY long torso (pant inseams are 32s) so it's hard for me to find ties that are long enough to tie a full-windsor with even using the extra long ties. luckily, my lab coat holds the short end of the tie down pretty well.

Thanks for the link. I'm missing the difference between the English and Windsor. Somehow they look exactly the same to me. What nuance am I missing?

I primarily use the half Windsor, slightly smaller knot than a full Windsor.

with an english you are looping to the side of the knot's center. IMO this makes for a wider knot and gives me (the illusion of ;-)) more control. In a windsor your loops are around the center portion of the knot.

Thanks for the clarification.

I going to try the Pratt/Shelby knot for a while. I had no idea there were this many ways to knot a tie!

I didn't even know there were different knot methods. I just use the "Italian" knot my entire life....I just sat down one day and tried to get the thing to work, and that was what I figured out on my own.

In the army we are taught the full windsor. (I'm pretty sure that's it). There are people at work who have had their tie for their dress uniform in the same knot since basic training, when they learned.

I use a different knot depending on the mood, shirt collar, and tie. Some ties are beefier and the knot gets too big in a full-windsor whereas others are pretty pathetic and look silly if tied half-windsor.
