TI Rescale with Inserts

I have been thinking about doing a MOP insert in a horn scale but decided to try it out first with wood.

First the blade a nice TI 69 I got with busted scales.

Second. I had the straight router bit kit in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 so I thought I'll just buy some dowels, make the hole, place dowel done. No way it is that easy. The 3/8 inch dowel is NOT 3/8 inch-it is more like 11/32 so it just wobbled in there. I took the bigger dowel and put that in my drill press and sanded it to the correct dimentions.

Third it is really hard to center the inlay with 2 rough cut scale blanks. Next time I will shape them, then put the hole for the inlay in.

Ok, ok, ok. Finish product. Just iPhone pics, no playdough. Not my best effort but a learning one.

The scales are purpleheart (no purple in them). The wedge and insert are maple.

Stay tuned for the MOP/horn scales.

Good save! I have plans to try this with acrylic scales at some point. I need to find a good, very clear glue to do it though.

Now half as wise
As you found out, commercial dowels are rarely sized accurately. For that size inlay, a plug cutter works much better. Not only do you end up with an accurately sized inlay, but you can use any wood you want, and make a face grain inlay instead of end grain.

Excellent idea. I'll get one.

Nice work Al. Got the same razor at home, my first rescale in acrylic. Am toying with finding some wood in the basement and redoin it now I've seen how nice it might look!
