Throwback to college dorm food

I was wondering if anyone else has any of those things they cooked in their dorm rooms in college that they go back to as a 'comfort food' once in a while? If you do, please feel free to share you recipe! I'll get things going with one of my favorites:

Ramen Grilled Cheese
1 ramen packet
4 slices bread
4 slices american cheese

cook the noodles, drain, while reserving about 1tsp of liquid & stir in the flavor packet
toast 2 slices of bread with a slice of cheese per.
Once toasted & the cheese starts to melt, put about half ( or as close to half as you can fit ) on one slice
Flip the second slice onto it & push down to try to get it to stick together
Repeat the process for the second sandwich.

Enjoy as is ( or if you can afford it, with a bowl of tomato soup )

I still do this today, although sometimes I add something like kimchi to the noodles or use a semi-sharp cheddar instead of american cheese.

Spam and Mac n Cheese! Cube up a can of Spam and brown in skillett, Drain on paper towels. Get Kraft mac n Chesse 2 boxes. Prepare and fold in Spam in a Corning ware dish cover with sliced Velveta Cheese Cook at 325 for about an hour.
Good ole Cheesy Goodness.

Spam n Bacon Cheese Dip. Cube and brown Spam, fry bacon and crumble 1 can of Rotel and 1 stick of VelVeta Cheese and cup of milk.

We were not allowed to cook in my dorm, but we were allowed to have a popcorn popper. So I had two. One was a pot type that I used for soup or anything boiled, including Ramen. The other was a flat pan type that worked a skillet. I made sure to open the window and deploy a fan so that the smells wouldn't drift into the hall. If that happened, then other guys would insist on getting some goodies as a bribe for not telling the RA.

We ate alot of Fried King Cotton Bologna with Eggs. We always had Eggs since my family raised Chickens for meat and eggs. I got 2 dozen every time I went home.

Heres a nice visual..I think from "yesteryear"...

That looks about right, minus the smoking and throw in a few servings of Taco Bell.

I didn't cook all that much in college, mostly the cafe. Any food made in the dorm was usually cold cereal or microwave burritos

My last year of grad school, I lived near an A&P that had a great bakery. I'd pop by first thing in the morning and buy a fresh & still warm loaf of the best bread I've ever tasted. Calabrese. Man, that stuff was good.

We raided the Bread store on Mondays cause it was the week old sale day. We would get all sorts of rolls and sweets that were still good. We just warmed them in the oven and served with ice cold milk.
I worked at a Hospital and when we had partys and special events I carryed home take out of shrimp , prime rib and catfish. We would eat 2 or 3 days because we could get up to 5 take out continers.

I am reminded of that Simpson's episode where Lisa became vegetarian, Homer had a bbq, and Lisa sent Homer's whole roast pig (on wheeled cart) hurtling down the hill and through Springfield ... all the while with Homer and Bart running after it and Homer saying "it's still good ... it's still good" ... sounding more and more desperate (desperater and desperater?) at each cumulative indignity to the hog.

I don't get nostalgic for anything I made during college, but I love institutional food. Every now and then I make Chili Mac or SOS, two of the most perfect foods ever created.

The dorm i was living had a nice kitchen, so making a nice meal was not a problem. But toasted sandwich was on the menu very often.:biggrin1:

I miss bbq on the balcony. Steaks, porkchops burgers and loads of beer.

And i can still remember disgusting food from cafeteria.

I guess my friends and I had it pretty good in the dorms. We all hunted and fished so we always had fresh meat, and campus maintenance would supply a grill if we asked. We had a big cookout in front of our town house style dorms once a week from the middle of September through the end of January.

Can you have a coffee pot. That's what I used to make my ramen in. Got the water hot...threw the ramen into a pot or poured over a bowl. Also did this with easy mac.

I had a Crock Pot, and a Hamilton Beach Hot Plate with Roaster pan for soups and roast. A Oster Beehive Mixer and Toaster Oven. We hid them in a used metal 20 mm ammo can that we could lock and side under the bed.

Well I'm still studying, but what i love to cook myself if it has to be fast is "strammer Max".

You need some bread, ham, pickles, eggs and butter.
Then you just fry enough ham to cover the bread and one egg per slice of bread.

Put the butter on the bread, the fried ham on top and some slices of pickles on top of that.
At last put the fried eggs on top of it all and enjoy with some nice bavarian beer. :001_tt2:

I was very limited in budget (as a majority of students) and my $ was consumed by the College Food Pyramid described above but I remember living off of $.99 bean, rice, cheese burritos that I would split during the day. If all else failed, I had some female "study partners" that always had a full pantry of snackable items.

Hmmm, yeah I still represent college style at times.

Ramen noodles, drained with Frank's Red Hot sauce on them.
Hot Pockets
Spam sandwiches
