What's new

This must be the end of times, I've had a clean BBS shave with an electric shaver

Guys,

At the risk of being flamed I've just had (yesterday night and again this morning a shocking good experience).

I've shaved my head with an electric shaver (Braun 790cc) and the result was amazing (textbook BBS) without any cut, nick or (more important) abrasion, and it took no more then 10m.

Since I can remember I've shaved manually with the usual disposable blade and goo in a can type of shave cream, Although I've tried electric for a while I've never could manage the abrasion it left on my skin and eventualy I've returned to the the old routine.

Eventually I've grown tired of the disposable Mack 1/2/3/4 things, bought a good DE Razor, brush and cream and never look back, I took great pleasure in the results, the savings (Ok. by being a 50 year old rational, father of three men, I have to say that over the years I've spent a lot of many in DE razors, brushes and other stuff, but it is the thought that counts, right?).

For a while now I've grown a beard and begin to clean shave my head ( although still shaving part of my neck and part of my face).

I have very a stiff hair so being a bald men by choice is no easy task (I have to make at least 3, sometimes 4 passes in my head and neck, which take time and at times may lead to some nicks, cuts and abrasion).

Being always in the lookout for new ways of improving my shave by way of either, augmenting the confort, reducing the time to shave or/and achieving a closer shave, I've thought of buying the top electric shaver of the moment and wonder If I could reduce the time of shave, by doing a first, rough pass, with the electric shaver and this way reducing the time of shave for at least one third.

After doing my research online, I've zero in the Braun 790cc with cleaning station ( new, around 200 USD) and bought one, almost new for 100 USD.

Yesterday night (with very low expectations) and with the clear intention of doing the first pass with the machine, not feeling any abrasion I've looked in the mirror, only to find what it seems a BBS (confirmed by my hand) I was shocked, the state of the art in electric shavers in the last 25 years had evolved in a way that I've not foreseen, no additional shaving was necessary it looked just right, this morning I've shaved againg only with the electric shaver with the same results (I could never shave with a razor with good results and no skin abrasion with a 8 hour interval).

Toughts and pros and cons

I realy love the ritual of the traditional shaving what I will do in the next days is to test my initial idea make the first pass (or even the first and second pass) with the electric and make the second, or third pass withe the DE Razor

Pros

Good clean shave in less time and virtualy no abrasion with the electric shaver
Cheaper (If doing electric only, no DE Razor, brushes, creams etc and yes, no fun)

Cons

No ritual, just click the machine and begin shaving ( when you are late this could constitute a Pro)
In a good day (no nicks and cuts) the shave from the the DE razor/Straight Razor will last longer

I would like to hear your thoughts and or experience with mix shaving (electric/manual)

May you all, have a good BBS with a clean skin.

It's the results that count.

Now you have another viable option to get a nice, close, comfortable shave.

Congrats!

i still find it extremely hard to get as close with Merkur as I could with my Fusion Power. So usually I'll do my standard three passes with the Merkur and then use whatever cream is left in the mug to do a touch up with the Fusion. I still save a ton of money because this way requires me to only buy a new pack of Fusion blades every eight months or so and I still get most of the benefits of wetshaving. It really is what works for you. And if that's what works for you, then don't deviate because you want to seem "authentic". Shave however you want when you want to shave that way. Maybe when you're pressed for time you can use the Braun and when you have some to spend on yourself you go the old school route.

Well, if it works for you, then keep at it.
i tried for 20 years and even with the new electric razors and just could not do it any longer.
Best of luck to you.

I have a Braun travel shaver, uses AAs or some such, and it gives a "not quite BBS", but perfectly acceptable. Has to be used almost daily, though, as it won't do anything for a several day growth. Good for road trips when you just don't have the proper time or facilities

I have been using an electric razor on my head for several years. I have tried to use a DE razor, but my head ends up looking like hamburger.

If that works for you then that's solid. I've tried electric but unfortunately that buzzing sound just grates my teeth like twenty cats sliding down a chalk board. Lol. I like peace and quiet. When I go to the barber I ask them not to use the electric around my ears. As for your observations on the improvements of electric I'd say are valid. Just take a look at Gillette first electric made in the thirties! Ouch. Two sets of teeth that ground back and forth. Truth is I wanted to buy it at an estate sale for collecting purposes but they were asking to much. Sigh. Anyway good luck to you on future results.

I, too, have a high-end Braun. BBS in minutes. No burn, nicks, cuts, etc. The only downsides are the noise and the lack of ritualistic fun. It's perfectly useful, but I like the fun wet shaving gives me.

My old man uses an electric 6 days a week, then a cart on the 7th to catch the errant hairs missed that week. Maybe you could save the luxury shave for Sundays?

Guys,

I'm giving my skin, 3-4 days, in order to adapt to the shaving machine ( I'm shaving electric only but longing to the return for at least one or two manual passes), after that I will be posting the results of the mixed shaving (electric/manual) in the following pattern:

I will be shaving my head clean and part of my face

I will be using no Pre-shave and will be using a silver tip Semogue badger brush and a TOBS sandalwood Cream, the after shave will be only the Osma Bloc

First pass will be a 15m electric pass (Braun 790cc fully cleaned, disinfected) before the shower ( although I always clean my head befores the electrics with a shiseido soap)

The blades will be new each day in order to mantain the "sharp" factor constant

After the shower I will be doing one ir two passes with the DE Razor

1 week (One pass with the Braun 790 and one pass XTG with a Merkur Futur and a Gillete 7 O'clock Yellow)
1 week (One pass with the Braun 790 and two passes XTG with a Merkur Futur and a Gillete 7 O'clock Yellow)

I will be rating the time, the smoothness (possibly by sliding a cotton ball in my head and neck and counting the patches it left behind), the cuts, the nicks and the abrasion ( the only way to rate the abrasion will be trough the Osma bloc test, burn sensation, 1-10)

Each minute counts as 1 as the threads of cotton the cuts, nicks etc so a value closer to zero will be better then higher values

Be advised that the time posted will be the summ of the machine and manual

May you all have have time to shave, money to spend and health to enjoy your BBS, It will be fun!

Final Note to Luke:

At least for the Braun 790cc (the only one I know) you will have to:

Change the cleaning station cartridge each 1 or 2 months (I realy like this feature, it cleans disinfects, and leaves a great lemon smell in the machine) - 5 USD (each cartridge) so between 2,5-5 USD/month
Change the blades/Foil each 18 month (I'm using the machine in my head, and part of face, so about 14-16 months) - 33 USD
