The Harry Truman Breakfast

I figured those of us who shave like Harry did might enjoy eating breakfast like he did. I had it this morning.

- 1 Egg
- 1 Piece of Toast
- 1 Slice Bacon
- 1 Shot of Old Grand-Dad
- 1 Glass of Skimmed Milk

I believe he also ate fruit in the morning. This is not 100% accurate, he had his shot of whiskey after his morning workout.

For anyone who counts calories, that comes in at about 440.

Also, if no one had read Truman by McCullough it is a great book and a long read.

Here is more info I found on the net.

One of our best Presidents as history now records. He wasn't very popular while in office though. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure if it's Trueman-esque, But:

Two eggs, over easy
Two pieces of toast and chees (I put the eggs over the toast)
Black coffee
Milk, cow, 2% milk fat.

Ok, lots of coffee. I think I'm currently on my third cup.

That is the only way to live. I drink between 5-10 cups of coffee a day. Depending on my mood and how the day is going. :thumbup1:

If word got out today that a president was slurping down a bourbon shot with his breakfast, there would be immediate calls for impeachment. The world has changed.

Truman said the bourbon kick-started his system in the morning.

The book by McCullough is lengthy but nevertheless an enjoyable read.

Plain Speaking is another written by the man himself. Met him several times, positive experience, fine man, said his name was Harry not Mr. President. Think he was right to "Sack Mac" but he should have played to win in Korea about the only thing I thought negative about him. Best Democrat President I can actually remember. Neat dresser and seemed unaffected by what he had done/been. Wish we had more like him.

I'm glad I dont count calories, my typical breakfast slightly differs in quantity:

5 eggs
3 pieces of bread (or 5 toasts)
5 slices o f bacon (or ham)
1 big cup of Earl Grey tea

just sufficient to start my day :001_smile

Given Your ratios in comparison to Harry's, it looks like you are short about 3 shots of bourbon.

Close... I'm at the College of Law, in my last year of a masters degree.
Still, I need fuel for mental work :001_smile
Perhaps 3-4 shots of whisky after breakfast would benefit my productivity?? I have to try that. If it has worked for Harry...

The "Garbage Plate" from Nick Tahou's in Rochester, New York. If Dewey had this for breakfast he might have defeated Truman. Eat this, and I think you can.... dare I say it? RULE THE WORLD!

Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate

Special Sauce Ingredients:

1 - medium onion, chopped
1 - clove garlic, minced
1 - tbsp. oil
1 - lb. triple-ground beef
1 - cup H2O
1 - can tomato paste
1/2 - tbsp. brown sugar (optional)
1 - tsp. ground black pepper
3/4 - tsp. cayenne pepper
1 - tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 - tsp. paprika
1/2 - tsp. ground cumin
1/2 - tsp. allspice
1/4 - tsp. cinnamon
1/2 - tsp. powdered cloves
1 - tsp. salt (to taste)

Plate Ingredients:
(Cheeseburger Version)
8 - frozen beef patties
8 - slices of white american cheese
4 - cups cold beans
4 - cups macaroni salad
1 - medium onion, diced
4 - cups hash browns, cubed
2 - loaves of fresh Italian bread
40 - generic butter pats
1 - case Genesee beer

Step 1 - Preparing the Special Sauce:
In large skillet, fry chopped onion and garlic in oil until soft. Add meat, stirring constantly with fork to keep its texture fine. Once the meat browns, add water and tomato paste. Simmer 10 minutes. Add sugar and spices. Simmer 30 minutes, adding water ,if necessary, to keep it moist but not soupy. Alternatively, you may use the griddle scrapings from Step 2 for the Secret Sauce (the authentic method).

Step 2 - Preparing the Plate:
First of all, you can substitute any of Nick's other main items in place of the cheeseburger. These items are hamburger, beef hot dogs (red hots, not white hots - that's Don 'n Bob's), steak, egg, veggies, and fish (plain old whitefish, I believe). And now onto the Plate.

Take beef patties straight out of freezer and lightly sear on super hot griddle. Do the same with hash brown cubes. Melt one slice of cheese on each beef pattie. Place 1 cup of beans, 1 cup of macaroni salad, and 1 cup of hash browns on a restaurant style paper plate. Place 2 beef patties on top of the heap, in the center. Spread mustard and diced onions over the beef patties. With a ladle, cover the center of the heap with Special Sauce. Garnish with bread an butter. Drink as much Genny beer as you can. [Emphasis Added :yesnod: ]Serves 4.
