The apartment garden - where do I start?

I live in an apartment and want to grow a small assortment of vegetables or herbs on the balcony. Its not a huge space, so I've been thinking of how I can maximize what I grow into 1 or 2 pots.

Right now, I have a large pot that is about 18" wide and 14" deep. I haven't really done much gardening so I'm at somewhat of a loss of where to start. Any help would be appreciated!

Well, it is July and you are in Ohio so don't plan on doing anything long term here. Herbs grow easily in pots - sage, tarragon, rosemary, basil, etc... Grow what you like to cook with. It is too late to start anything from seed but you can probably still get plants at a nursery or garden center. Small bush tomatoes or cherry tomatoes do well in pots, but you might need support for it like a cage or rod and twine.

Swiss chard would grow well in a container, it is probably too late for peppers but they will grow in pots too. In fact, I can't think of much that won't grow in a pot. I would stay away from big stuff like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, vining tomatoes or peas. Just grab a bag of garden soil or Miracle grow and give it a shot.

Thanks for the info! I actually just moved back to South Carolina and just forgot to update it.

I'm actually doing the same thing. I took a Rubbermaid bin, and punched some holes in the bottom and sides, and filled the bottom with gravel. Then I filled it with potting/top soil, and put the bin on top of the lid to catch overflow. Provides lots of space, I've got basil, strawberries, oregano, tomatoes, and sunflowers growing.

I have thought about growing a few veggies on my apartment patio, the only problem is the patio is extremely shaded, and little sunlight gets there.

You can get a wok shaped pot and grow chives, rosemary, basil, terragon and a curry herb. Its not curry but tastes like it. In addition, cherry tomatos grow well in containers.
