Picked up a Grand Shave King a few weeks ago on EBay. Taking it for its first test run this morning with a Feather blade. Will update the results later.
I believe they made the Grand Shave King between 1942 and 1943. Either that or between 1945 and 46. It was a two year production run before the perfected it. The company went under. This is a second generation I believe. 12 tooth. I should really check my facts before posting.
It would be interesting to gather up that history. Mine is slightly different: no center channel in the cap. But it has the side channels and 12 teeth on each side.
Ok so looks like the razor is a Type 1 Grand Shave King from 1945. The Grand King Shave was patented in 1945 by Joseph Mellon and had a two year production run (1945 and 1946). Of the corse of the company their were two production types before the company failed.
You can read more on the two production types in the following thread http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...King-Self-Lubricating-Razor-comparison-Photos
Well, that was one Smooth Shave... My set up... Grand Shave King/ Feather blade, AoS Fine Badger brush, TOB Jermyn Street Collection, and Cada AS... Three pass shave... WTG, XTG, ATG.Last prior shave was yesterday.
First off the razor is so light it just glides across the face requiring no pressure. It handles the bumps and nooks with ease. The teeth on the razor head allows for some lather to remain behind after your stroke allowing a follow through stroke if needed. On the second pass I nicked a small bump on a tough area of my neck that I received from a previous shave. I fault that to poor handling on my part. Well, things where so easy after the second pass this razor screamed for just one more pass ATG just for sh!ts and giggles.
Results a DFS... almost BBS with one nick in the neck that the Alum closed up nicely.
After the fact my face was a bit tender and not sure if this razor should have a slightly milder blade on it for my tender skin or I just have to learn its ins and outs a little bit better but I could not be happier.. My current preferred blade is a Tradere SB bit this may have to replace that though I would miss the weight.
I have had one for several years now and find it to be the smoothest shaving razor I have ever tried. I got lucky and found one a few months ago in a group sale of four razors on e bay for $40. I wound up with a nice Gillette slim in the deal and a couple that were almost worthless. All in all a great deal, considering what Grand Shave Kings have been going for recently.
