What's new

Tatara Muramasa Adjustable brush now available

I just received the email with this announcement. Very cool looking and Tatara partnered with Semogue for the badger and boar knots (not sure about the synthetic).

Yes, I too got that e-mail.

Interesting concept; I remember a different shaving forum doing a few years back a limited run of adjustable loft brushes in collaboration with Shavemac.

These are the specifications according to the Tatara website:

Loft: [48 – 58] mm
Knot diameter: 24 mm
Handle height: 51 mm
Weight: 114 grams

Using a dial located on the bottom of the brush, and featuring a one-piece design, simply rotate the dial to switch between settings 1-3, which are:
Setting 1 - Hair length 48 mm*
Setting 2 - Hair length 53 mm
Setting 3 - Hair length 48 mm*
To remove the knot, rotate clockwise beyond setting 3.

* Note that Setting 1 and 3 specify the same hair length, which I suspect to be in error and one of these settings should actually read 58 mm.

But at a price range from $275 (finest badger) to $201 (synthetic) and $197 (boar), I am not convinced that the benefit is worth the extra cost, even though Tatara does offer replacement knots separately so that one handle could be matched with three different knots.

I really like the brand and the ingenuity, attention to detail, and quality behind the brand, but I probably will sit this one out.

I can sort of understand why someone would want an adjustable razor; either to switch settings between the first and second pass or to be able to buy one razor to determine how much aggression you like instead of 3 or 4 non-adjustables with varying aggression.

But I have trouble understanding how an adjustable brush would be beneficial. Particularly at these prices. You could get a very good badger brush, excellent synthetic, and excellent boar all for the cost of the adjustable badger and have pretty much every scenario covered. Or get a couple badgers made with different lofts.

I agree. It seems an adjustable brush is a solution in search of a problem.

You mean like in “a solution in search of a problem”? :sneaky2:

Still, kind of clever to come up with something like this…
