Switching from Proraso Cream...Advice needed

Hey Guys, I've been using the proraso cream in the tube for about 3 months now. I'm new to Wet shaving and after trying a sample pack have finally decided on feathers as my blade of choice. They require less passes on my beard so less irritation. While I think the proraso is decent I've found that I prefer a bit more glide. I wanted to try out a shave soap to get an idea of how that feels since I know some prefer soap over cream and vice versa.

I see Proraso makes a shave soap. Is it worth trying that product if I use the cream or is it the same thing? Would it be better to try Col Conks Glycerin soap instead? I'm looking at the Amber one for that. I'm assuming these are better than trying the $1 Williams Mug Soap from CVS?

Thanks for the feedback!

Welcome to B&B, great to have you here.

Proraso is good stuff as a cream or soap. Since it would be your first foray into soap it would probably be best to push out & try a soap that is glycerin based or with Tallow. Proraso ingredients are a different animal from these. Feathers are pretty aggressive so a tallow based soap will provide excellent glide & protection for those puppies.

Consider the following in terms of cost in choosing a soap.

I would venture to say DR Harris soaps (consider Arlington scent) would be a most excellent choice IMO. The scents are subtle & the performance will deliver everything you are looking for in a shave soap. DR Harris might be more money then you may be used to spending on a soap after using Proraso, but they last a long time & provide excellent value. When you consider a soap of this calibre, you will truly see & understand you get what you pay for - top notch performance.

Tabac is great at half the cost but you might not like the scent, some like it, some do not.
Personally, I think the scent & performance is out of this world.

Mama Bear's glycerin soaps are a great choice for value & performance as well.

Spending money on the higher end soaps will be rewarding in the sense you will save money in the long run considering you could end up spending more money on mediocre & just-get-the-job-done kinda soaps till you eventually discover high end luxury soaps are merely incredible.

Good Luck

There are many types of soap out there and always try new and different ones to find what works best. When I first started I actually tried some williams soap and mixed a little shaving cream into the soap I think I had some cream from Origins my wife picked up for me. Tabac is a fav soap of mine also really like Gentleman's Best soap contact Thirdeye a moderator on here about the Gentleman's Best. But def an awesome soap that glides like a dream,

Welcome aboard and you'll find all your answers on here, a great place to start

Welcome to B&B!

As much as I love Proraso, I think you should try something different. I'm with Riley, Tabac would be an excellent choice!

Col. Conk isn't so bad but not as good as Proraos IMO. Geo F. Trumper Coconut or Rose would be an excellent choice too.

Thank you for the welcome as well as the fast response! You guys convinced me. I'm going to try the Tabac. I'll keep you posted on the results once I get it. Thanks again!

Col. Conk is horrible, its just garbage.

Go cheap and try VDH Deluxe pink puck easy to lather, its cheap and wont let you down. (Glycerin based)

Once you get lathering a soap down, try something else I say.

I personally use Williams for my soap and Proraso for my cream, however mentioning Williams around here is a no-no.
You actually have to know how to use it and heaven forbid someone spend time liking a cheap tallow soap.

If you're used to Proraso maybe a soft soap would be a good idea to try. Cella Crema da Barba is a personal favorite of mine

My 2 cents. The Proraso 'soap' is just the cream only in a pot IMHO! Williams is very poor, realistically any other soap you could buy would be better.

Have you considered soap sticks? If find they are much less hassle to lather. I would recommend Valobra or Palmolive, both quite inexpensive and excellent. My first pot soap was Mitchells Wool Fat. Once you learn to lather with it the razor 'glide' can't be beaten.

Hey Guys, Just wanted to update everyone. I tried the Tabac. I got it the week after this thread. #1, I love the smell. So does my girlfriend. I found it very easy to lather using the instructions I found on the forum and founs it very smooth to shave with. I like it MUCH better than the proraso. I'm really digging the soap thing. Glad I tried it out! Thanks!

Awesome!!! :thumbup1:

Welcome Salsation, the Tabac is a superb choice. Now you must try a QED shave stick (Bath Tub Gin)or as recommended above, some D.R. Harris or some LaToja. As far as thick creamy lather goes, Tabac is hard to beat. Enjoy!
