Superior Shave horn toot and grit gap question.

Had an amazing experience with the superiorshave.com. Very quick shipping, corresponded via email to get me the perfect stone I was after, and when I asked if they had any birch wood boxes to purchase that would fit my coti he said they were in rare supply at the moment and didn't think they have any. Well when it arrived three days after purchase it was indeed in a wooden box that I hadn't had the chance to purchase. Just threw it in. It fits SO perfectly you can only put it in one way surprisingly.
I had a good go on the coti but had a tough shave. Obviously lots to learn and I have been researching like crazy and have a lot of things to try tomorrow when I have the time to set aside for a proper honing session. My question is.... I use a dmt 600 for bevel setting and am looking for a stone to bridge that gap between 600 and the coti. I know many use a 1000 but I'm thinking since I'm coming from a 600 there might be better reason to jump to a 2000 or maybe a 1000/4000 norton combo. What would you guys do? Norton combo/natural ~2000 stone/don't worry about it and just use 600 and coti? Thanks. Any and all help appreciated. Oh and here's my precious...

Very nice!! Yeah TSS has lightning-fast shipping...Looks like a perfect size coticule too!!

If you're using a 600DMT for bevel-setting, then I would definitely look at getting something like a 1k....I frequently go from 1k to coticule and it seems to work well...Hey, you might even find that you don't have to drop down to 600 for most blades once you start to use the 1k!! I have a Chosera 600 but I only use it for really bad blades....

I remember this discussion over at coticule .be with bart who owns 600 dmt and he said the coticule can take of 600 scratches? depends how fast your coticule is ? if you can get a look at bevel after use with slurry and you can get a nice sans blast look and there are no deep scratches I think you will be ok , best thing is to try it , bart did say 325 dmt was a bit much of a jump but 600 was fine ..

Okay ill search for that thread. I have the 325/600 dmt combo to lap my stone and for knives but that 600 almost puts microchips in the straight edge when I look with my loupe. I'm guessing that if I go from 600 to coti I'm almost essentially just doing a one stone hone on coti to get rid of those 600 scratch patterns anyway. If a 1000 is that big of a difference from a 600 dmt ill probably spring for the chosera, but if I need another grit to make the jump I would much rather get a combo stone.

The Chosera 1k is an EXCELLENT stone IMHO...well worth the money....But hey, if Gary says that it's doable (600 DMT to coticule) then I'd listen to him...he knows coticules inside and out!! I personally have never tried it and I know that Chos. 1k to coticule works well; that's the only reason I recommended it...

Oh man. It's hard to ind many people making the jump from dmt600 to coticule when searched, but there are MANY that make the jump and rave about it with the chosera 1k straight to coti. I've even read that it cuts like a 1k yet leaves a polish like a 2k. That's exactly what I am looking for so I will be springing the extra bucks to get a good gap stone. I had done tons of searches but starting this thread gave me the correct keywords to search for so thank you guys. Dmt 600 coticule=not much. Chosera 1000 coticule=tons of positive results when searched.

Yeah, I have used Norton, Naniwa SS, King, and DMT 1200 to set bevels in the past, and the Chosera blows all of them out of the water IMHO....Just the feel & speed are far superior...I will typically set the bevel using my Chos 1k, then switch to dilucot or ellipticot on the coticule. Works very well....

Chosera is a great preliminary stone to open for the Coticule.

No money? Get a thick piece of glass or better yet a polished marble edge tile, 4"x12", from Hone Depot. Stop at Auto-Hone on the way home and pick up some 2000 grit sandpaper. Go back to Hone Depot because you forgot to get some Loctite spray adhesive. Or maybe cause I didn't tell you to get it the first time. Anyway go home. The 2k paper is in 1/3 sheets lengthwise. Lightly spray the back of one piece with the adhesive. Let it air dry for a couple of minutes, then carefully apply it tight and flat to the marble tile. Now you have a perfectly flat 2k hone. Splash a little water on it and get honing.

Whenever you remove paper, remove all glue residue, as well, or it will cause trouble with the next piece you stick on there. Acetone works good for that. Hone Depot has it. Buy a quart can of it.

The same edge tile also makes a great plate for honing with lapping film, by the way. It is what I use.

Obviously you can use the same trick with 100 grit, 600, 320, whatever you need at the moment.

Oh, it's the new language: Honian. Every time the word "home" or "zone" or "own" or similar sounding words appear, substitute "hone". Home-made becomes hone-made. See? Even sounds better. Handicap parking zone becomes handicap parking hone. Owner becomes Honer. Need money? Go to the bank and apply for a hone. You can mortgage your hone as collateral for the hone. Nibble SWMBO's ear and neck and have her honing with passion. Don't forget to stimulate her erogenous hones. Do you do cardio and yoga and tai chi to get toned? No! Get honed instead. The human skeleton is an assembly of 226 hones. look it up on your smart-hone. And likewise, get your marble tile and spray adhesive and superglue for scale finishing at Hone Depot, and your 2000 grit sandpaper at AutoHone, because Hone Depot only has up to 1000 grit.

I shop at Breast Buy all the time. That's a good place to buy a new iHone or a cordless hone for hone use. They have nice hone theater systems, too.

Just wanted to jump in and say I've had nothing but good experiences with the Superior Shave. Excellent people to work with, customer for life.
