Suggestions for scent?

So my bottle of Proraso splash is almost empty...

I need a replacement, but I'm having a hard time finding one that's ok with my wife.

She:

  • Has grown to like Dominica Bay Rum
  • Likes the Proraso ok
  • Thinks Penhaligon's English Fern smelled rank
  • Thought Spanish Leather smelled "soapy and like an old man" (not good)
  • Likes Musgo Real ASB
  • Likes Nivea Extreme Comfort ASB smell
  • Does not like TOBS Sandalwood (powdery & old-manly)
  • Likes Polo, L'Occitane Vetiver and Dunhill x-centric colognes.

What's an example of something I should try a sample of that might satisfy her? I'm not a huge cologne wearer, so it's more of a aftershave splash or balm that I'm looking for.

If she likes the Proraso, Musgo Real, and Nivea then why not get one of those? Otherwise, Art of Shaving's sandalwood line smells fantastic (not powdery or old-manly) but rather creamy IMO.

Funny you mention X-Centric, that was actually the first cologne I ever purchased back in high-school. I would avoid something like that as it's too common, and cologne-y. Perhaps you could try something different like L'Occitane Eau des Baux? It has a great woody-incense vibe to it.

I use a Nivea ASB myself, but not for the scent aspect as most ASB's are not meant to be long lasting. If you are looking for a "smell" you really should be considering colognes.

My best advice is to try something different, you never know where you may find something you really enjoy. :thumbup1:

Some Floid Suave splash imo! The stuff smells like you could eat it.. Im sure she wont mind you smelling tasty!

Another vote for La Toja

Speick- smells very manly. It is a mature scent, but not too "old."

I don't know what Spanish Leather or TOBS sandalwood smell like so I'm not sure what she is calling "old man," but I really do like the smell of Barbasol Brisk. It smells similar to, but I think better than Skin Bracer, and for less than $2 it's hard to not at least try it.

I'm hoarding lots of the cheaper but proven brands. (both Italian Floïds, Proraso, Hattric Classic, Pitralon Classic, Speick, Old Spice, Aqua Velva, Tabac, Alt Innsbruck is on arrival)
I don't wear them for the scent but primarily for the treatment of my face after a shave.

The more expensive brands will probably do an equal job but I can't bring myself to slap on the expensive stuff like I do with Proraso or Aqua Velva for example.
For scents I go to the higher end colognes and I'm making sure that the AS doesn't clash with it.

Im definitely in the same boat as you with picking up semi cheaper well known A/S splashes! I think the next couple i try will have to be, Pitralon Classic and most likely Tabac.

If your main purchase decision factor is what your wife thinks, why not let her pick it out? I'd get some decants from superlather and/or Badgerdecants, find a couple you both like, and go for it?

That's what I'm doing, although so far, it's been all strikes with the decants.

So I figured I'd ask and see if I could get some guidance in the right direction with the decants.

As for the cologne vs. aftershave thing; well, she's not too wild about too much cologne, but aftershaves seem to be about right for her, in terms of intensity on me.
