Suggestions for a Japanese straight

My Dad's birthday is coming up and he is interested in trying a straight. He also has an interest in all things Japanese, so I'd like to combine the two.

As a bit of a novice I have no specific knowledge. I've seen the Feather AC, which I believe uses replaceable blades? I have also seen the non-folding type straights, which have piqued my interest.

Are there any recommendations for alternatives? Also, which razor presents the best option?

I've got a western style (standard scales and fold in blade), Japanese straight and crickey it's sharp. It gives a fantastic shave.

Japanese razors aren't terribly hard to find, if you are willing to spend a decend chunk of money. Check out Gentlemen's Best for a few vintage ones.

Does your dad have any interest in using straight razors? Straight razors in general and Japanese straight in particular require time and dedication to master.

He has wanted to try a straight for ages, but keeps leaning towards a shavette, because he thinks they are cheaper. He also has an interest in Japan and World War 2 history. I'll be getting him a proper straight, but thought it would mean more to him if it was a Japanese straight

Gentleman's Best has (had?) a few vintage traditional Japanese straights - aka Kamisori - for sale.

Rasurpur has new stock Iwasakis (from Sanjo Seisakujo) as well as Japanese made western style straights.

Vintage kamisori are available on Ebay as well. I'd stay away from them unless I know the seller.

Tsetbinsb has a couple more posted in the BST now. I have no clue if they're a good deal or not but saw them and thought of this thread.

The Feather AC also has a non-folding Japanese style straight which uses the Feather disposable blade. This is a very nice razor minus the upkeep of a traditional straight.

I have one, and it is a nice heavy razor that gives very good shaves. Its worth having a look at it.
