suggest a safety razor for a noob?

hey guys up until now i been using regular disposable razors..my father used a double edge safety razor when i was kid and when he wasnt around i would take the blade out and put shaving cream on my face and pretend to shave..lol but im a big boy now and i im in need of some help on choosing a good brand and one that will last me a good time..my budget is $30 for my first razor and im hoping that will get me something decent?

Welcome.
I would suggest a Gillette Tech. It's a super shaver, widely available and even a very nice one should cost well under $30. Check the B/S/T forum here first. You'll get a good razor and a fair price.

you can get a nice Merkur for under $30. the Merkur HD gets a lot of praise around here but I also like the Merkur 33c - it's a great beginner razor that offers a mild shave

Personally I started with a Merkur HD (aka heavy duty aka 34c). It was a good razor and I still use it on occasions. However, I really just fell for my 40's Super Speed.

+1 for the Merkur HD.

It was my first DE razor, and I my only DE razor for several years, untill I stupidly lost it in a move .

+1 The TECH is my favorite DE razor. However, my favorite razor is a 1942 E Schick Injector SE. To me, it beats the DE razors hands down.

I would vote for either a Tech or a Super Speed. Both are great, relatively mild shavers, and both can be had on the B/S/T for well under $30.

A cheap and decent new razor can be found here. Spend the rest of your money on a sampler pack of blades; the right blade for you is what really makes the difference.

I'd suggest for your first DE, go to the B/S/T forum and pick up a decent SuperSpeed. You'll find it's easy, it's probably very much like the one your father used to use, and on the B/S/T it will register far below your budget, allowing the rest for blades, soap/brush, and aftershave.

I've been quite happy with a Gillette SuperSpeed. Mine is a '56, but I don't know that I've heard anybody say to avoid certain years. I think they've got a pretty good reputation as consistently good shavers across different years even if ones from the 40s are slightly more praised. I'd highly recommend picking up one of these. I wish I had started with this rather than a Merkur Futur, which now I don't even use.
