Suddenly losing hairs

What are some of your thoughts on why a brush, which never lost any hairs, would suddenly lose some? Yesterday, I pulled out a rather large Vulfix, which I haven't used in quite a while (probably a few months or more), gave it a good soak (minute or 2) in my shaving bowl (since I've been face lathering, that's all I use it for), and had a wonderful shave--did nothing at all different. Except this time about 4-5 hairs came out. Could it be that a brush should be used more frequently to avoid things like this?

Either there were just some loose hairs that have finally worked out of the knot or there is a build up of soap residue in the knot and that's destroying the hairs causing them to break during lathering. How long have you owned the brush?

I've probably owned it about 4 years. But I always rinse it out real good after shaving. And the hairs coming out are long--if they're breaking off, they're breaking off pretty far down--no glue on them.

Could be soap buildup. In case you have not seen it, I think How_to_Clean_a_Shaving_Brush describes a reasonable procedure. Some folks might object to the 1:1 vinegar rinse at the end, or recommend lowering the vinegar to something like 1-T per cup of water.

I have seen older brushes that are brittle from age, but the hairs usually break off fairly high in the loft. A treatment or two with hair conditioner often fixes that problem.

It probably depends on how long you leave the brush in the 1:1 vinegar solution. The wiki page recommends "soak for a few minutes" which is probably fine. I use a more dilute solution (1:16) but I soak a little longer, about 30 minutes.

Since you have already tried the cleaning procedure, we can probably rule out soap deposits. For right now I would keep the brush in rotation, and see if it happens again.

1:1 i thing is too much but even 30 minutes
I treat my knot as my hair,a little bit tougher but not too much
In kitchen we use hot water and vinegar to dissolve the fat for example of a Lamb cooking
Few minutes are enough,so i think few minutes are enough for the remaining soap/cream in our brush.
