Stupid Question

Okay so I know I am going to look like a compete fool but here goes anyway.... My wife brought me so Penhaligon's shaving soap in a wooden bowl. Now I have been told to work up a good lather you also need to buy another bowl other wise you tend to waste so much of your soap is this right or wrong:blushing:

P.s if I'm being thick let me know in constructive way as its not only my skin thats sensitive:biggrin1::biggrin1:

Yes bud you are right about needing a second bowl if you want to lather that way, some of the guys here prefer to face lather but i prefer to use a big cappuccino cup to make my lather :thumbup1:
Check out this mantic video

In my case, I face lather. No need for another bowl!

Do not be afraid to face lather, it is much easier than you might think. Until recently I used to bowl lather all creams but then I found out that they can be face lathered easily as well. By the way, I hope your wife did not inadvertently buy the reformulated Blenheim Bouquet shaving soap because it appears to be an absolute disaster (see recent threads on the subject in the soap forums). If you did indeed get that one and you still have not used it, then I would go to the store ans swap it for an English Fern instead. Best of luck!

Thanks on the two occasions I have used the soap (English Fern) so I have face lathered but I did not get a lot of lather I think this falls more to technique rather than the soap (poor workmanship blames his tools and all that...) so I will try a bowl but I will not give up on the face lathering (watch this space)

I wouldn't even bother with another bowl unless you like clearing up. I'd just go for face lathering. Once you've tried it, you won't look back. Give it a go!

My experience so far is that both face lathering and bowl lathering is ok, but bowl lathering is a bit more effective. The advantage I see with face lathering is that my face gets a little massage by the brush. Actually I use both techniques in my prep routine. First I face lather in the shower and let the lather sit for a few minutes to really soften the beard, then I get out of the shower and proceed with bowl lathering as i get a much creamier and thicker lather that way. Then I shave. This routine works great for me and gives me the best of both techniques.

With soaps, I face lather. With creams, I do use a bowl and I didn't want anything breakable or heavy for that matter. So I went to the local Chinese market and bought a medium sized rice bowl made from melamine. Actually kind of nice looking and no worries of dropping it. And cheap for new stock.

But cheaper is checking out a thrift and getting a huge mug for $1, usually breakable though.

If you create your lather on the puck, you're going to waste a lot of product, but if you load the brush for 30 or so seconds you can then create your lather in another bowl or on your face with much less waste.

Personally, I'm a face latherer because I don't have counter space or desire to add another bowl to the process.

I think my morning shave will never be the same again and the m3 can go to back of the draw just like all the other h/street brands I be suckered into buying

Also assuming that's the new formulation of Pens EF, you've picked one that's pretty hard to lather for quite a few of the vets here too.

You don't need to get super fancy with the bowl, I'd started out for quite awhile just using a regular cereal style bowl. You can also get pretty good results lathering on your palm or up on your face.

Thanks Defcon5 just been to supermarket and picked up a small bowl for £1... photo to follow(smile) tried to make a lather worked fine so now just need my new futur to arrive I think on Wednesday if I'm lucky
