What's new

Strange, but True Dept.

During a recent business trip, I realized that I had forgotten my after shave, and for me, no after shave is like a day without sunshine and forgetting to put your pants on before going outside. It’s just not a good situation. One of the hotel amenities was some mouthwash, and I considered using that, but then I remembered the flight attendants passing out samples of Purell Hand Sanitizer. I hurriedly checked by jacket pocket and found three small packets of Purell. I ripped one open, squeezed an appropriate amount into my palm, and patted it on to face. Well yes-sir-eee Bob, it was really very nice – cooling, refreshing, and quick drying; the scent was very pleasant too. I found the ingredients listed on the back, and the Purell I was using had aloe and vitamin E along with 65% ethanol. I know that a lot of alcohol-based after shaves have as much as 70% alcohol in them, most Bay Rums being an example. The sting, and I do like a bite to my after shaves, was not bad at all. Throw in some essential oils, a little menthol, and you’d have yourself a world-class after shave. Don’t think it will find a place in my rotation, but as they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

I agree about feeling naked without my after shave. I use witch hazel sometimes, followed by aloe vera gel or Aqua Velva.

Just gotta add some menthol crystals to the wife's bottle of hand sanitizer and bingo, a new aftershave. :001_smile

Bump.

I've mentioned before wanting to add alcohol to an AS that has insufficient alcohol. The problem is that OTC isopropyl rubbing alcohol smells awful, overpowering the AS scent. I could buy some grain alcohol at the liquor store and it would probably work better, but my budget is so far in the rear view mirror that I can't see it anymore and that stuff is a lot more than a buck.

Then I thought of hand sanitizer. Really it wouldn't work; it's too diluted to dilute into something and bring up the alcohol level of the new solution enough. However, then I thought of adding stuff to hand sanitizer, using it as the base. One could use the spray form, which is more liquid than gel. Of course I searched and found some threads. In addition to this thread, I found this good post in another:

Actually, it is 65% alcohol:

Purell Instant Hand Sanitizer, Original

Active Ingredients: Ethyl Alcohol (65%)
Inactive Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Isopropyl Myristate, Propylene Glycol, Vitamin E, Amino Methyl Propanol, Carbomer, Fragrance

What is interesting is that the list of ingredients looks like an aftershave.

Thanks,
Mike
