Straight Razor of the Week - Idea Thread

what about a revolving set of folks who would do a profile on a razor in their rotation?

maybe a couple of experienced folks could head the endeavor or there could be a new member every week.

might be a fun way to bring some "top of the mind" awareness and new knowledge to the straights forum.

Awesome idea. When I first started wet shaving I really thought the world of DE razors was confusing, but straights are a whole other (bigger) can of worms. I think this would be a great way to learn about straight razors.

is that like something that would make ebay prices on the profiled razors go up? if so i'm definitely not for it.... (but any member who has used more than 100 razors can send me a PM with profiles of their favorites )

or is it an appeal for more straight razor reviews by putting some structure, i.e. one review every week?

we're going to have to have some fella's step up to the plate.

i don't think that im really qualified to give thorough reviews, but maybe that doesn't matter, especially if photo's are involved, since we all know they speak louder than words.

how about each member who posts a razor profile picks a willing participant from a list of interest in this thread?

Maybe someone who has experience in restoring or maybe some one who knows some of the history behind a certain brand of razor. I know that I have a couple of razors that look very nice and shave good also but I can't find anything on the web about them.

he-he, bring on the chronics then :)

my favorite wedge has no manufacturer's stamp on it and i believe it's made in 1830s from the vendor stamp. it looks like many other wedges out there, so the only way you can get another that is as good as it is to just keep trying as many as you can afford to buy clean and hone, so i'm quite certain this isn't going hype anything.
but i very much doubt i'll be reviewing any of my favorite brands - sorry you figure it on your own :)

Someone should start on 8/8 W&B`s they cant go up any more in price, could they ?
Kind regards Peter

I think it's a great idea and if you ask, I'll give one of may favorite razors a review. I agree with Gugi though, sometimes forum chat can be used to overhype prices and I thought the forums are there to help and guide and not line members pockets with silver.

I have a terrible feeling that this will only serve to drive up prices. Post a review of a razor and someone uses it as a reference when they are buying one like it. Post an editorial extolling the virtues of said razor and all the sudden every kid in the playground wants one. Look at what happened with the stahly live blade in the safety razor section...

Seriously if you're new and starting out with straights and all you want is information regarding what would be a good straight to own, just post a thread asking for suggestion. People will give you excellent suggestions without the price jumping up in insanity. Perhaps I'm more in tune with this than others for the plain and simple fact that I'm a college student, but at the same time I'm worried that prices already are climbing...

I am against this. I vote people trying to "learn" more about the world of straights just ask the pros. If they pros are unavailable, ask a fellow newbie and wait for the pros to post a response. IMO straights are 10 percent equipment 90 percent skill. In other words unless you've been shaving with one for a while (which I will add I have not, as is evident by the fact that I cannot get BBS yet without irritation), you are not going to get the benefit of an uber straight any way. Safety razors are about equipment, straights are about technique.

That 1 grand dubl duck scared the living daylights out of me. This only helped confirm it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...EWAX:IT=&item=380127818477=&autorefresh=true=.

Edit: Forgot to add, we don't have enough straight reviews. Why not just ask people to post more reviews?

I am game. Initially, I too was concerned about driving prices up with good reviews. Fact is, prices are already insane for many vintage brands, not just the Ducks. There are a ton of Fillys out there, yet sellers have no problem asking - and sometimes getting - close to $300.00. Current trends notwithstanding, if you are patient and disciplined you can find just about any razor at a decent price.

IDK. I think there are a few more brands that haven't skyrocketed in price just yet that are due to jump.

True. I still think if you know where to look and are patient, good deals abound. Not quite like they did a year ago, but they are there. In particular, I think we'd be safe covering new production and most 5/8 razors. I'd be against reviewing brands like Heljestrand until I get my Mk. 33 .

If you want to do a review then just do a review in the appropriate forum.

If you just want to do a whats my favorite razor thing I don't see the real value in that.

I'm a college student. I'll end up having to sell half the blades I play with at some point just to keep getting blades to play with. I beg of you have pity and make it 4/8... I love the 5/8 and 6/8 blades.

Covering Heljestrand wouldn't really change much. Nor would Dubl Duck, etc. They are already pricey enough not to be the low hanging fruit newbies go for. Covering W&B could be disastrous. 8/8 wedges aside you can still get one at an affordable price. After the shavepocalypse, they will end up 100 bucks a pop...

I guess I'm really just against this because honestly if a newbie want's a suggestion, he/she can just get one by asking...

My favorite wedge is a Wostenhom from the 1830's too. As to your other razors, I guess I could review them since so many of them end up as cherished members in my rotation. If I buy one more from you, you'll have to put me on your Christmas card list.

SHHHHHH.

Some of us don't have a Wostenholm wedge yet...
