straight razor care

This is probabaly a very dumb question so forgive me if it is.

I recently bought two straights and a paddle strop. I thought I would be good to start my straight shaving adventure but turns out I'm not as ready as I thought I'd be. So I decided to put the learning to shave with straights on hold. I dont want to sell these beauties as they are very nice to look at, especially the Seraphim Japanese styled straight.

So my silly question is, do I need to make any special care for straights I dont use? Will something happen to it over time that I need to prevent with an occasional strop or two? thanks

Just put a light coat of oil on the blades so they do not rust or deteriorate from storage.

Oils can age like anything else. So, put a reminder on your computer to pop every year, say, to check whether the oil needs to be reapplied.

thanks for your replies. i hope to get serious and start straight shaving in the next 6 months or come summer. with the stress of first year phd program, im afraid i wont be patient enough to learn technique correctly and give it up entirely. So hopefully once i take a break, i can relax and learn how to do it right. will be oiling the blades tonight.

I would be replacing the oil every four to six months and giving the blade a check at the same time. Be sure to store them in a dry part of your home, perhaps in a container with a silica packet near them.

yah, just store them somewhere dryy (tupperwear with silica is awesome idea). Oil helps for long term, but I dont use it myself.

+1.

If six months is your timeline...and you live in a dry clime...dont even bother. Just store in a dry place.
