Storing My Straights

I am expecting to get my two Dubl Ducks back from restoration today, and I was wondering how I would store them. I know dry is key. If you are not going to be using them for a while do you oil them? What type of case?

Thanks so much for your patience with the newb questions. I am close to being ready to actually try this, but I want to take care of these razors. Also, I live in New Orleans...extreme high humidity if that makes any difference.

If I am not using a straight for a while, I put a little oil on the blade. Any non-petroleum based oil seems to work just fine. The case from the link is really nice and beats the little boxes I use, but at that kind of price I would rather have another straight or two than a fancy box.

If a cardboard case is with the razor I use that. If not, a pencil box works just fine, holds a few razors, is low cost and stack nicely in the cabinet. I also save those little silica desiccants, when I come by them and put them in the pencil box.

I prefer using vaseline (white petrolatum) because it is thicker than most other oils. But, any oil will do.

(Some will tell you that vaseline contains water. It doesn't.)

The price of that case :scared:! It's nice though.

Natchez, you suggested a non-petroleum oil and Larry, you recommended Vaseline. Are we talking daily, or just if you are going to lay the razors away for a while? And I'm assuming you mean a seriously thin coat?

Thanks for all the advice.

I put a drop of 3 in 1 oil on my finger and apply that to like 3 straights if I am going to put them away for a while. it doesn't take much and goes a long way.

I saw an article from around 1930 as I recall that microscopically studied blade metal. One of their assertions was that water starts to degrade an edge immediately, even if it isn't visible. They said the degradation from water and oxidation was an equal enemy to a sharp edge to shaving!

Whether this is true or not, I see no reason not to oil a blade between use. As I said, I use vaseline.

I apply only a thin film. The amount of oil is thicker than if I used a typical viscosity "runny" oil.

Again, flip a coin, and select an oil. In my opinion, anything that will keep oxygen from contacting the metal is fine.

I have used this stuff. It comes in an applicator. I picked it up in a fit of Pacific Shaving AD. It works very well.

I don't oil my blades but perhaps I should. I don't keep my razors in the bathroom so they aren't exposed to a moist, humid environment. I store mine in pen display holders, the razors stand upright.

I always use a Hoppes gun cloth to wipe down the blade after every shave once I have dried it and let it sit out for a while.

I'm with Wid, and use a special oil made by KG industries...that I use on my Red Rider BB gun collection.:biggrin1:

I purchased some Vintage Blades blade oil...which I'm told is more expense than the stuff you could buy at a Lowes or Home depot...but it works fine. I'm not really sure its necessary.

As for a case, I store them out of the bathroom in my bedroom in an armoire...no special case, although I've thought about it from time to time.
