Stone RuinTEN

Has anyone tried it? I had a 3oz sampler at the brewery and it practically melted my face off with all the hops. I'm a regular IPA drinker, even big IPAs, but this stuff is a different level.

I haven't, but I generally like Stone's offerings. I wonder why they aren't feeling the winds of change regarding over-hopped huge beers though. That stuff is on the way out.

That said, I do love Stone and I'd like to try this one.

I tried it at the brewery as well and thought it was a little too intense. I've pretty much decided that the over-hopped beers aren't really doing it for me, just wrecks your palate too much. I did try a double IPA from another San Diego brewery that was awesome, according to the brewmaster they use a ton of hops but it comes out with an amazing flavor and mouthfeel.

I just bought a bottle from Trader Joe's last night. Drank it, too. It's really good, but I like the regular Ruination a bit more -- the malt backbone shines through more on the "regular" stuff, and it's a tad less pine-y.

Still, Stone will teach you what you like in a flavor profile. "This is what big hops tastes like". Now I know!

Big beers are great for showing people what the ingredients do to a beer.

Got it?:a11:
GOOD!:a11:

I really couldn't grasp all the different flavors until I had an "big" version of a specific beer. I remember my first American Barley Wine (Great Divide's Old Ruffian). "Okay so that's grapefruit and pine with tons of caramel malt."

BoT, I enjoyed the RuinTen. I felt it was much better than the Enjoy By release by Stone. A little hot, but not too offensive.

Big hops are kind of Stone's thing. There may be winds of change but I think the demand for hoppy beers will always be there, and Stone will be there to fill the demand. They just bought a new building doubling their capacity, so they must be doing something right.

That's a very good point. Once you get punched in the face by a particular flavor in a big beer it's much easier to pick it up when it's more subtle.

Enjoy By IPA is pretty tasty. It's a different approach to IPAs than what they do for Ruination. Instead of using a moderate amount of early addition bittering hops they hold off until the end of the boil and use a lot of hops (2-3x normal hopping rates, or more) to get the same bitterness with a lot more flavor and aroma. It's got quite a nose, even more so if randalled.

With Ruination being my all time favorite beer, I couldn't wait to try this. It didn't disappoint, but it is a HUGE beer.

It's a tough call for me between the Enjoy By series and Ruination. It would be like trying to pick your favorite child...you could do it, but you'd probably feel guilty.

Had a glass at Alewife in Baltimore last week. I really enjoyed it, but it was certainly best served alongside food (duck fat fries with a nice chipotle aioli, in this case). Not something I'd seek out regularly, but something I'm glad to have experienced.

The only Stone beers I have had are Arrogant Bastard and Smoked Porter. The porter is pretty good, I've had better but its available and consistant!.

Arrogant bastard is my kind of beer. Its not a huge beer, but its good. However, I would not drink it all the time. I would grow tired of it. A few times a month I get a bomber and enjoy the heck out of it! I do need to try some of their IPA's they make. But, I am stuck on Custom Brewcrafters Caged Alpha Monkey (Rochester area brewery). Such good stuff.
