What's new

Still usable?

I picked up this straight but it has more hone wear on the spine than I figured it would have. The blade is a bit under 5/8 at its widest. I'd like to make it into a 4/8 to match a 4/8 round point I have.

Anyway, is the hone wear on the spine going to present a problem when honing? It has pretty much the same amount of wear on both sides except most of the wear is on the end of the blade on one side and mostly on the middle on another. I can take more pics if need be but I think this will give you a good idea.

I am not sure about this razor: seems to have a frown in the middle. If the honewear on the middle of the spine is right above it that may well be caused by warpage. That'll cause you some problems getting it back to business.

Is it possible for you to shoot a photo with the tip of the str8 facing the camera? Similar to the fourth photo of this thread.

There's a small chip at the heel of the blade, but, nothing serious. I can't see why not. I think the frown is part of the reflection from the camera (illusion).

Yep, no frown. No chip either, it was just a speck of debris. :001_smile

It does have a slight smile and what I'd like to do is breadknife it down to 4/8th to match a 4/8th round point that I have. What I don't know what to do with is the spine. Should I grind that down so it has even wear across on both sides? Or would that make it have not enough of a bevel when honing? I suppose the width of the spine would have to be measured to make sure it is in a proper ratio with the width of the blade. This is a learning exercise for me as I don't really have honing experience beyond touch ups on a barber hone.

Sorry for the poor pics, I suspect they are useless. My camera doesn't like to focus well in macro mode.
