I thought it would be the tobaccolypse that does the hobby in. Instead it will be a death by a thousand paper cuts.

There are about 8 billion people on this planet. About 7.5 billion of those won’t be able to afford such hobby.

Of the 500 million people about 20% are under age, 20% won’t touch it due to health reasons. Further 50% will find the hobby disgusting. And 9.999999% are time poor or are happy with cigarettes.

At best, I think globally there are maximum 500,000 of us pipe smokers.

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been further consolidation in the industry.

There has been. I think there there’s 3-4 companies that between them own almost all of the pipe tobacco market. It they’re not selling it under their label, they’re selling the leaf to the few independent companies that still make their own blends.

So, in looking around at what to smoke on IPSD, I noted that the well known "American" brands are no longer American Brands. It appears that STG (Scandinavian Tobacco Group) owns everything nowadays, Captain Black, Sir Walter Raleigh, Half and Half etc. Even the well known brands from Lane, are...

Brands STG doesn't own (yet): C&D, Gawith & Hoggarth, Dan Tobacco, HU, Prince Albert and Carter Hall. Are there any others?
