startet kit price?

I got the straight razor bug a few weeks ago. I'm wondering what should be a good price to shoot for as I shop around for a complete starter package? so far it looks like about $150 - $200 for all the materials

That's possible...

I would recommend a vintage straight off BST... From either Larryando or look at the ruprazor shop...

They both have kits (shave ready straight + strop) for sale! It will be much cheaper than your planned price... That way, you will have enough money to get a few more straights!

Just a bit of advice: buy a budget minded strop for your first stop. You will likely nick your first strop multiple times as you learn your stropping technique, so you don't want to buy an expensive model, and then be mad at yourself for destroying it.

RupRazor sells the Filly strop for $20 shipped, and "starshavingsupplies" on Ebay has several nice strops in the less than $30 range, several of which even have a linen component (which the Filly lacks).

I have the 3" wide model for "starshavingsupplies", and have been very happy with it. It has a nice long stropping surface, and a felt/ linen component as well. Plus the vendor is a wealth of information, and loves to help newbies out.

+1. I was introduced to my first straight razor from Larry at whippeddog.com. All in, the newbie kit was about $50, for razor, strops, and some balsa and grit for honing. Larry is great with shaving "tech support" as well! It was a great opportunity to see if I would really be into this straight razor stuff. Yep- I am, BTW...
