Started my journey with bone and horn scales

I started working now with Camel bone and Buffalo horn.

Aside from the wicked smell when sanding they are pretty simple to deal with.

The bone seems fragile and i worry when working with it while the horn is pretty simple.
i made scales for a friend for his awesome blade and found they really look cool and classy.

Made a couple of more for 2 of my blades and now just got to pin them.

I find bone really makes a straight look rich and classy.

Again all this possible from your info here in the forums.

Very nice traps! Where did you find your bone blanks? I tried finding some on ebay a while ago but didn't get much luck, most are too short to make scales.

Had them for a while but got them from ebay.

There was a lot of searching for 6 inch scales.

I just found some! I hadn't checked in a long while, and the seller from UK from which I usually buy horn seemed to have some in stock! Just ordered enough bone for 2 scales, and 3 honey-colored horn. I love the look of bone, hopefully I can manage to work it without too much trouble.

I imagine your belt sander comes in handy?

By curiosity, do you use a respirator when cutting/sanding the bone scales? From what I am understand it can be somewhat important since you can risk inhaling some of the bone dust and if it could easily contain some nasty bacteria which could lead to nothing too good.

I usually wear a little dust mask when sanding horn but bone dust is even finer so I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't buy something better.

Nice work.

I always wear a respirator when working with horn, bone. I even wear one when sanding blades. I never did when sanding until one day I blew my nose after and saw specs of black in the snot (sorry for the visual) but it tells me the particles are being inhaled

I have this one, can use the CA glue, mix the chemicals for micarta and cant even smell them

Hmm I think I'll go and buy one similar if I can find it for cheap locally. It looks like my next few razor scales will still be horn (and bone for a first), and I always notice that even with the little mask I'm wearing I get some of the dust in my nose. Might as well invest a bit on safety.

Thanks Doc,i got to get one also cause i am making a few bone and horn and they do stink.

I also don't want that stuff in me.

Just got to find a similar mask here in Canada at a fair price as they are not at great prices like that one.

Probably go check on ebay first.
