Sprint Smartphone Options

Any advice on the various Sprint offerings for smartphones? My (***) regular Motorola Razr got dropped one too many times and I need something else, and I would like to get something that gives me access to my work e-mail. My requirements are simple:

  • Easy access to corporate e-mail
  • Reasonably good web browsing (speed/rendering)

I was thinking of a Blackberry, but I have never had one and don't know one model from another. I have had some Palm products in the past that I have not liked, so that is likely not an option. Don't tell me about the iPhone since I am sticking with my Sprint contract for a while.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Cell phones are my expertise as I am a tech nerd. If you had to stay with Sprint, I would go with the Tour as well. I would also suggest the Palm Pre, suppose to be a good phone that fits in your hand pretty good but I don't personally like the keypad on it compared to the Tour. The Tour has a good size keypad for guys to type , add that to the fact that Blackberry has the best push service when it comes to e-mails for any phone on the market I think it should be what you are looking for. If you are looking for a slide out keypad, I suggest the HTC Touch Pro 2, the first one was awful but on the second there are supposed to be some great upgrades to the phone. But , I myself am a loyal Blackberry user.

Tour. Pre has better web browser but I can bang out emails all day long on the Tour without a problem. That said, you can load third party browsers on the Tour (ie Opera, Bolt).

Well, the Tour is faster and newer compared to the Curve. It has a great screen and has world phone capabilities whereas the Curve does not. The Curve is on its way out. I have a Curve on Verizon and its been great but when you get the spinning hour glass while it tries to catch up its annoying. Curve has 96mb flash memory vs 256mb on the Tour. Curve supports up to an 8gb memory card while the Tour can handle 32gb. I use mine as my main mp3 media player and its decent at that but certainly not an ipod.

Here's a comparison chart from RIM's website.

I beg to differ. Verizon is set to release a new version of the Curve in the next few months.

Ah yes, theee, "Throw my phone" prompt. It is very frustrating. The 8830 I have is good, but the software glitches are irritating as hell. I'm actually looking at moving to the Pre or the Tour myself. The HTC TouchPro I was looking at, but there were too many things I didn't like. If this has been resolved with the new model I may look again. A physical keyboard is a must for my smartphone.

 In fairness though I do have quite a few apps loaded on it that I don't use so I really should remove them and reclaim the space and perhaps the "throw my phone prompt" would not be seen so frequently?

Look at the free memory on the new Tour phone though. MY storm has free memory of usually 30 MB's. The tour has 200+. Big difference....

Maybe not. I don't have too many, and I see it more than I should. Also, music randomly disappears off of my memory card, which is infuriating, since I paid for it. Sprint has no answer for me on that yet.

How does the Tour compete with the Pre? My phone is in the process of breaking as welll.

That's apples and oranges. If you want a better browser the Pre, but if you want a better overall phone with a comfortable keypad then the Tour is the way to go. Go to www.crackberry.com and read up on the Tour if you would like to know more details.

P.S if you are really in Boston I hope to God you are not on Sprint as I had to cancel due to awful service.
