Spitting when opening pen

I have just started using fountain pens - started with some disposables (Varsity) and an inexpensive fine nib italic from China. I love the writing from the Chinese pen but noticed that occasionally if I open the cover with the nib pointing down it may spit out some ink. Is this a normal fountain pen behavior? It does take some force to remove the cap.

Best to keep the nib up especially when you know a pen spits. Eye-droppered pens with low ink levels and pens with compression converters, like a Hero 616, are known for this trait.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the possible pressure differential opening the pen (no hole noted in the cap) and the slight jerk when the cap does come loose may cause the spitting. Been trying to remember to open nib up.

Although my penmanship is not good I really like the distinctiveness of the fountain pen writing. Have tried to use it for everyday writing.

*sigh* ... Chinese pens.

... try an inexpensive Japanese pen ... Pilot 78g or Metropolitan, or a Platinum Preppy ... and IMHO you will notice an improvement over the Chinese.

I've tried the Pilot 78G and the Preppy and can recommend them as well. My complaint with the Preppy is the proprietary converter is twice the cost of the pen.
