Spanish Point/Barber Notch, etc....

Ok....so I have a nice vintage razor with a barbers notch on the end. The Barbers notch and a Spanish Point to me look basically the same.

My question is....what is it for? I mean...it looks really cool, but is there a function behind it. Typically form follows function...so I'm wondering what the function is.

I have come to the conclusion that it is just for looks. After all, when and why did the term barber's notch come into existence? I'd wager its a more recent term.
