What's new

Something like Cool Water.

Howdy boys,

I'm new to the frag game, and would like some guidance choosing some new colognes. I've been wetshaving for nearly two years now and have stuck to mostly aftershaves for fragrance, but recently purchased a bottle of Cool Water after reading a very favorable review on here. I have to say that I absolutely love it, except that it doesn't have the staying power I'd like, plus I would like to explore a little.

I'm looking for something clean and fresh like Cool Water that has good staying power and can be purchased in a good sized bottle for well under a hundred bucks. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure that it has any better staying power, but Freshman by T&H is one of many Cool Water clones. If you want the real deal, you're going to need to suck it up and invest in Green Irish Tweed. You should at least pick up a small decant of it and be prepared to have your face melted if you like CW.

Aspen is reportedly somewhat similar, but I haven't tried it and could not opine on the longevity.

Like Tim said, there are several frags in that vein that are probably indistinguishable unless you're a frag head. GIT is definitely a great version of 'Cool Water like' but at a bigger price.

I'll suggest two others: Pen's English Fern - like a more sophisticated version of Brut. (Trumpers Wild Fern is less expensive and similar though it doesn't last well on me. Others prefer it, YMMV). Guerlain Vetiver: classic vetiver- not as fresh due to some tobacco in the drydown but wonderful nonetheless.

If it's 'freshv you seek, Creed Original Vetiver, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver or Mugler Cologne might fit the bill. ( In decreasing cost)

If you like Cool Water, you might want to give Swiss Army Classic a try. I think they are in the same boat. Not the same scent, but in the same boat.

Thanks everyone for all the good citizens.

Mistercitizen,

I'd certainly like to try it.

Does anyone know a good site for ordering samples?

Beautyencounter.com is a good place for Creed samples I believe. I've ordered from them and they have quite a few to choose from. Someone else might have a better idea. There are other members here who specialize in selling decants and samples.

From my review of Cool Water...

"As I mentioned yesterday, many claim the original Cool Water is practically a dead-ringer for T&H Freshman. Well, I find quite a similarity between Freshman and this latest version of Cool Water. Cool Water lacks that initial blast of lemon and bergamot, but the Rosemary is there to spoil the opening along with coriander. This herbal opening lasts about an hour with Freshman and maybe 2 hours with Cool Water. The heart is the best part of both frags lasting for several hours before the amber and musk come forward turning a little powdery on my skin. I like all aspects of T&H Freshman better than Cool Water, but again GIT is going to win this competition for me with it's bright lemony verbena lasting 12 hours, peppered with sandalwood and this frag doesn't turn powdery."

Floris JF is another scent with some similarity to those already mentioned. But few, if any, are going to surpass GIT for staying power.

I would say Floris Vetiver if he likes the cool water. It is not made there any more. The new crap, save your money. You will do well with the vetivers and even patch type EDC. Also, Antaeus, Egoiste will hit the spot. HABIT ROUGE will make you happy as well. Good luck, am looking myself! Nice day, Jimmy

I can vouch for Aspen. I'm on my second bottle, and although I do have Cool water also... there is a faint difference between them usually only noticed by the wearer (Pine). And very affordable... around 25 bucks.

Mugler Vetiver is another affordable and great scent. I get compliments on it every time I wear it. Just a great scent as most vetivers are...

Another light scent - more woodsy - is kanon norwegian wood A fantastic 7 dollar sandalwood...

Also, anything from L'Occitane... typically under 50 dollars a bottle, and if you have a store around you can check out the 10 ounce sprays they have all around 50 bucks and very solid citrus scents.

I have to say that sounds to me like a selection of fragrances that are totally unlike each other, and not remotely similar to Cool Water.

A 2.5oz tester bottle of GIT can be had for about $81 from Scented Monkey (no affiliation; applying the memorial day coupon available on the website).

That's about as cheap as it gets with Creed...

Here are some "fresh" scents that will give you 6-8 hours, have a cool water vibe, and all well under $50

Perry Ellis 360° Red
Sander for Man by Jil Sander
Lanvin l'homme sport
Aqua Quorum
Tommy Bahama St. Martinique

All of these give me great longevity and work great in hot weather

I also have Nautica Voyage and Curve Appeal, these are also nice scents but I don't get the staying power of the above mentioned.
Try any of these and you won't be disapointed

Myperfumesamples.com is cheap. Also try luckyscent.com

Green Irish Tweed came out before Cool Water. CW is a GIT clone, and a bad one at that! A more "manly" Creed in fougere family is Bois du Portugal..
More accessible to you is Rive Gauche by Yves Saint Laurent.
