What's new

Some tools arrived.....

but I can't have my first DE shave yet, no blades! I've been reading a LOT here, and I like vintage stuff, and I have some experience w/ ebay,
soooo.....I bought some of the well-liked old Gillettes. I know I need to stick with one in the beginning, but, I got a little carried away. :blushing:
Total outlay, delivered, was $35, so not TOO bad.
The oldest one is the first model SS, it's from 1951. The Tech is from '58 and it LOOKED the newest when they arrived. The flare-tip is a '56.
They all got scrubbed w/ smple green and a toothbrush, soaked in scrubbing bubbles, polished w/ Maas, and a hot water dip. They all look ok, no brassing or bent parts, and seem to operate smoothly. Can't wait to try 'em!
I have a sampler coming in which includes crystals, derbys, dorco (ST 300s) and Israeli reds. If I start w/ the Tech, what blade would be a good choice? My beard is lighter than average, I guess, but I need to shave every day. Thanks for all the help!

Excellent! And all great shavers, in my experience.

I'd recommend you use the tech first, it's the mildest of the three. My favorite blade in ANY razor is crystal, but everyone differs.

That's a nice group. I use all of these, regularly. You'll like them.
+1 on the tech recommendation. I've recently rediscovered the tech after rotations through fatboys and superspeeds, and it's been wonderful. (shaved with one this morning, actually) Throw a derby in it -- you just might like it.

All 3 are very nice razors...for beginners and experienced shavers!

Looks like RAD has set in early  However, try to stick with one for at least a couple of weeks, preferably a month, so that you can sort out your technique without introducing an extra variable.

I generally just load Feathers now but the Tech with a Derby is a nice combination :001_smile

+1 for +1 on the tech. I recently refurbished my Dad's old tech and it's a great shaver, mild yet produces a close comfortable shave in one or two passes.

The tech is the way to go. It's a very mild razor. Perfect to learn on and make a few mistakes. When I use one, I do two passes.

What are you using for creams/soaps?

believe it or not, it's a whole package deal to find your "golden recipe".
The razor, blade, soap/cream all have to work together.

Don't forget your post treatment! :001_cool:

I have some col Conk's Almond on the way. Cheap, but hopefully decent. I am using Nivea PSB for afters : )

Very nice beginning to your collection! I too would recommend the Tech as your first razor. It's very mild and extremely forgiving of mistakes. The Derby blade would probably be a good place to start as well, though I personally prefer the Red Pack IP over the Derby...
