What's new

Soap scents from light to heavy.

Been on a soap ordering tear as of late much to the astonishment of my wife. Hehe. Anyway, I'd like to list some scents that I've come across for those who gravitate towards soaps with little to no scents and others that love heavy scents and with some in the middle. Not speaking of it's performance or costs just scents. Please feel free to add or adjust the scale if you think the order of it is wrong. Any input is appreciated and better yet for you soap hounds with more product & experience than mine of six please insert where you think the natural order of scents should be. I should note some soaps are so close to being of the same strength that they fall into the same group as their scents are only degree apart. Let me start with a base...

1) Mikes unscented.

The D R Harris soaps are only lightly scented such as the Arlington.

All the Turkish soaps are similar in scent. The nearest rival would be Tabac

Thanks. I added the above. When you mention Turkish soaps do you mean they are all heavy scented?

Yes, they all smell similar to ARKO and Derby is almost the same. Not used the Camelot or GZD but other members have commented.

I too agree that Tabac is heavily scented but only if you get hold of a fresh puck.

My new Creed GIT soap is so strong, when I lift the bowl off I can get a whiff of it at the other end of my room (OK, the room isn't that big I guess, but it is a strong scent).

Heavily Scented:
QED
Mike's

I'd argue that for a triple-milled soap, Oxford & Cambridge is pretty heavily scented as well.

Agreed. I was actually waffling on this one. The one puck I had actually sat unused under my sink for some time thus diffusing some of the scent. Thanks for the correction & input.
As for Mike's do you have a particular one that's heavily scented or is the whole line up heavy?

Interesting. I always thought of the O&C soap as a mild scent. I really must revisit it and the matching cologne.

EJ Sea Buckthorn has a pretty strong scent IMO.

When my puck was new, I'd call it medium. Now that' it's a year old, I can barely smell it. I don't know if grating it affected that or not.

Here are my thoughts:

Very Lightly scented
Institute Karite
Vintage Williams

Lightly scented
L'Occitane Cade
Speick
La Toja

Medium scented
Calani Dubai, Havana, and Oriental Plum
Haslinger Honig

Heavily scented
Crabtree & Evelyn - Sienna
P160
Ogallala Bay Rum Company - all scents

Maybe your used to it?
I think the incense type scent you get from it is strong if memory serves right. At least that was my initial impression when I sniffed it. I then pif'd the puck.

Thanks! I was wondering about IK. That's next on my list to try. As for the disparity between the two at least were in the same zip code and not far off. Perhaps once we get more input of the various soaps then we can decide. But both of you are close while neither has said " it's very light scented" and the other " heavy scented". That would be a puzzler.

I can only speak for the 3 I own: Orange/Cedarwood/Black Pepper, Hungarian Lavender & Lime.

Of these 3, I think the O/C/BP & HL are roughly equal to one another in terms of scent strength. But it's an arguable point; scent & scent perception are so subjective.

That said, I think most people would agree that the lime is the weakest of the 3. Not so much because it's less heavily-scented than the others; rather, I think it's because by its very nature lime is a much more ephemeral scent. Even QED's lime (which is strong!) becomes much more evanescent after that initial citrus blast. (Well, at least it does to my nose.)

I consider La Toja to be medium scented at least. I really love the scent so I'm happy with it as it is. :thumbup1:

I could be convinced of that. I think I called it light because it's a soapy scent (to me), so it doesn't come across as strong as it would if were a non-soapy scent.

One possible variable is the age of the puck when purchased. I have no idea how long these pucks sit before being sold.

I see where your coming from and your right scent is subjective and at least for me a soaps can be the best in every category but if the scent doesn't sit well I'm getting rid of it. So my intention of this thread was to have a general sign post of what one can approximately expect as long as we don't have such huge variance as Arko being listed as mild scent but O&C falling between heavy & medium I think we're ok. I'd hate for people to spend money (as I have numerous times) only to arrive and I can smell it throughout the house thus wasting money. Hopefully everyone can find something that appeals to them looking here at the list. Thanks for your input in this Evan.

Very true! But I think through the many, many post that have been contributed within various threads there can be a consensus. luckily most soaps that are popular have a high turnover for us wet shavers so we are getting for the most part getting fresh pucks, tubes, and tubs. So far on this list I think we're ok and nothing is so far off as to be absurd. Now vintage would be near impossible to nail down. Thanks for your contribution Pat.
