Soap going bad?

Hi all. I've been using jagger sandlewood as part of my usual lineup along with palm olive and omega. I've never had a problem before and I genuinely like the soap and love the smell. Still working on my lather technique with it. It's only probably a month or so old. Today and Wednesday I used it. Put my face on fire. Wednesday I thought maybe it might have been a fluke so I washed my brush really well and put it away in case my kids put something on it:) gave my face a day to recover. Tried again today and same thing. Nothing to do with razor as it hadn't touched my face yet. I immediately washed it off and still couldn't shave as my face was burning. 3 applications of baxter of california balm and it still burns and my skin feels really tight. Has anyone had something like this happen when a soap is fine and all of a sudden starts to act that way?

That's really weird. I've had burning reactions to certain soaps, largely I think based on the scent oils (one was from a brand where another scent was fine, the other was from a guy beta testing a soap, and it was crazy heavily scented). If anything, one would think having it open would tend to calm the effect, as scent tends to evaporate.

That would be strange to just develop it though I'd thin. After using it 20 or so times. If thats the case that's not good as I love the scent of it. I did forget to mention both times I put lemongrass eo in my bath before I shaved as I love the scent of lemongrass. But I have natural lemongrass bath soap I wash my face with and that doesn't effect me. And the burning only starts after I apply the sandalwood soap

You can develop an allergy to anything at any time. If your soap went bad, it would not start burning you. If anything, it would develop orange spots and might smell off or at least like nothing. That being said, soap rarely goes bad. There are a few oils that are prone to going rancid, but most soapers would never use them in a soap they intend to sell.

Generally speaking, when a soap does not work there are two possibilities: 1). the soap is awful and 2). some part about you (technique, allergies, etc.) does not agree with the soap. Since the same recipes is used over and over again, there are no such things as dud soaps, bad recipes, etc.

Actually this is how histamine reactions develop. You're fine until the receptors begin to say, "Hey, get this outta here. Now!"

I took penicillin products after dental work for years, just like everybody else, until one time I landed in the ER with an allergic reaction.

You could start a complicated desensitization routine with an allergist. But I don't think any shaving soap is worth that kind of money.

My wife, BTW, is allergic to walnut oil. (There goes a great tumbler media out the window.) So particular wood allergies isn't uncommon.

Have you got another soap and brush to run a test with? You hear about lanolin allergies, but Jagger doesn't use lanolin...I think.

Yes I do have other soaps and brushes. Going to use something else today. Then if all is fine I'lluse the sand alwood soap tomorrow. If if burns I'll know the culprit

If you nail it down to the particular soap or brush - more likely soap - then just pif it and move on. Do not try to desensitize yourself without guidance. It's only likely to get worse instead of better. And tipping it overboard can have you in a pickle.

OTOH, if your sister-in-law is an allergist or something like that, then there's free advice. Maybe.
