Soap bowl question

I read the sticky note and it seems that I need two bowls for making lather. One for the soap and another for making the lather? I don't know why when I called the store in CA for my order they didn't tell me that, especially since my soap is not in any type of container. Oh well I guess I'll just get another plastic bowl.

I won't be using that Palm Springs store anymore either.

You dont NEED another bowl for making lather...you can charge the brush with soap in whatever container you keep your soap in, and then you can lather on your face, in your palm etc.

Alot of guys use some type of bowl to hold the puck of soap and something else to lather in as well but its certainly not required at all.

Its all personal preference!

You can also build your lather on top of the soap but that would use a lot of soap...

I prefer face lathering but that's a preference, not something you *need* to do.

I have a wooden bowl that my soap is in and breakfast bowl for making my lather you can also use a coffee cup to make a lather

You needn't spend money on "specialized" so called shaving cups or bowls.

Go into your cubbard and simply use a coffee cup or mug, or even a small cereal bowl will do. Preferrable one without sharp corners where the sides meet the bottom. Find one that is more of a gentle slope in the corners and that will work like a champ (more bowl shaped is best) Having a handle on it is nice too so you can put your thumb throught it to help hold it while you cradle the bowl in one hand. I myself am currently using an oversized coffee cup thats rounded inside and that works perfectly fine for mixing lather. (You can place your soap puck into another coffee cup or mug as well, it needn't be a tight fit but a close fit is good enough. - just empty it of any standing water after any shave.)

Don't mix you lather right on top of your soap puck as you'll eat up way too much soap (and $ too) doing that. After you pick up enough soap on your brush, move to the seperate cup as mentioned above and do your lather prep there. Or you can also just buy soap sticks and learn how to face lather too and there, no bowls are needed, not even for the soap. Good luck!

Once you get the soap go to target and buy a cheap single bowl that is about the same size to hold the soap. You can get another bigger bowl to make lather in as well while you're there.

I now have 3 wooden bowls and want another (need) smile

Ther problem with that (in my eyes) is that you often pay more for the wooden bowl then you do for the soap inside it. I don't have any wooden ones, and I have no desire for any either. The screw top plastics that Mama Bear and QED use for their soaps are perfectly fine for me. It's sort'a like perfumes where the fancy container actually costs more then the liquid inside it.

but they do look nice and would hate to ruin a good look to my shave den now by adding a plastic one (smile)

Well, this is good to know. I melted a puck of soap in a small bowl and I lather on top of the puck. If I'm reading correctly this as a more wasteful method of lathering? I thought it was normal for bowl lathering.

Thanks to everyone for replying. I thnk I'll get a plastic that won't break in the shower - I'm sure I'll drop it at some point.

I with you and doing the same?

So am I reading correctly in saying that I should be loading the brush from the puck then whipping up lather in an empty bowl for a proper bowl lather?

Correct. otherwise to continue to build your shaving lather right on top of the puck will cause the brush to continually pick up more soap (thus, wasting it) and also make it harder to control the consistency of your lather, since you will always be picking up dryer soap from the puck too. Mix in a seperate bowl / cup allows you to control the moisture level easier without wasting soap.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I need to make some changes.

If you're shaving right in the shower, I agree on the plastic. Many of the soap vendors, such as Mama Bears and QED USA package their soaps right in plastic screw top containers, so bear that in mind. Then you just need a seperate mixing bowl or cup.

Just don't throw away those take-out Chinese plastic soup containers. Not as cool as a mug and you might walk around smelling like Wonton soup, but they work nicely for working a lather.

Ok, this is what ive been doing. Loading my brush for about 20 secs to get as much soap on as poss, with a few dips into the water. For my 2nd or maybe a 3rd pass another say 5 sec swirl on my soap to get a little more soap on my brush.

In the link to Mantics video that Ken aka Rodeo posted, how can such a small ammount of soap be enough for 1 pass never mind a 2nd or even a 3rd pass???.

It looks to me as though theres more water than soap, so how come the lather isnt runny or even disappear?.

The soap goes a long long way, you just need to spend a little time working it into a "lather." Soak your brush first, then shake it out but not overly hard. Then go to your soap puck and start swirling it and wait for there to be some evidence that white soap is forming (press and swirl). Then continue for 20-30 seconds tops and you'll have more then enough soap to now make a lather that will easily go for 3 passes of shaving. So now move to the "lather cup or bowl" which should have a half teaspoon of water in it or slightly more and begin to work on swirling the soap into a lather. Add dribbles of hot water as necessary to keep it moist enough, like a runny cream. This takes me only about a half minute or so but may take you a tad longer. Once you've built a lather up adequately, there is plenty of lather to go around and more then enough to reload your brush too. I'll find you a video if you wait a few minutes.

Also, in your prep work (as your brush is soaking) I also add a half teaspoon or so of hot water to sit right on the soap puck. Thats the same water I then dump into my lather cup before I begin mixing my lather. Dump it in there before you begin to pick up any soap on your brush.

Here's a video:

Here you go, just skip the other "uberlather" ingredients and just use your soap.
