What's new

So-Say you're gonna go onna trip-

Could be a coupla nights, or a coupla weeks. And, of course, you're gonna shave while you are on the trip--so you bring a bag to hold your shaving stuff. Are you going to bring a de razor, and if so, will it be a travel model, or will you just take a long a regular razor and that's that. Now, if you are taking a de with you, will you just toss it in the bag, or will you have some sort of case that you will put it in. And, will you leave a blade in the razor, or will you take the blade out and store it in some manner. Or, since you will only be away for a few days (give or take), will you simply use one blade per day and put the current day's blade in some portable used blade holder.

Well, I'm in that situation--I'll be leaving for a short while--and I am trying to figure out how to manage my shave stuff. I do have a Gillette travel tech, but, I have come to view that razor more as a novelty. So, I am curious as to how my brethren of the badger and blade would manage their shaving stuff while away.

I've read many different ways of doing it. The big rule of thumb that I would have is "don't bring anything irreplaceable." Combined with my enjoyment of traditional wetshaving, here's how I do it -

(for flying I pack my stuff in checked baggage)

Travel cases - an Edwin Jagger black case that also holds blade boxes for my DE razor, a black leather case for my GEM 1912 Junior (old electric shaving razor case that has been repurposed for a higher calling)

Razors - British New open comb, GEM 1912 Junior

Brush - Muhle silvertip fiber synthetic in the Muhle travel brush tube

Soap - a tin of Mike's or Stirling

That's it.

If I had to buy a cartridge, I'd probably get some Gillette Guards from ebay to try. They do look interesting.

Flying? I'll go back to carts for the duration.

Driving? I take my regular straight and bring a spare in case the edge is damaged.
I do have a dedicated travel brush, and two dedicated travel strops.

First things first. I never leave the blade in the razor during the transport. I play it by ear whether to just bin it, or rewrap it---but at DE blade prices I have no problem just tossing it if it comes to that. I might re-wrap it if I only used it once and I'm traveling a short distance to a new location, between shaves.

When fly I bring either my Tech or my Merkur 1904. Both are fairly small razors with their original handles (at home I often use bigger handles on these razors). I disassemble the razor and put it in a container of some sort. A big RX bottle might work. I have also been known to wrap the razor parts in CLEAN socks and tuck them into a shoe in my suitcase. I also have a large RX bottke to pack one of my smaller knot brushes. And, of course, I check the bag, if flying.

I'm waiting for a real cheapo DE and if it is decent, that will become my travel razor as Teppanyaki suggests.

There are plenty of inexpensive cases for razors and brushes. If I traveled more often I'd get one.

If I fly, I either skip shaving or go with a cheap disposable razor.

Driving, I have a dedicated mug with VanDerWilliams, or my MB America shave stick, a VDH Boar, and a Krona with Dorco ST301 blades.

Tech with a bakelite handle. I have the little travel Tech case which holds a travel Tech and blades. I toss the longer Bakelite handle in the Trumper's samples bag. The brush is a restored ER travel brush in a travel tin. It goes in the bag, too. The bag and cream, along with a shaving stick, go in the Dopp.

I use the same DE when traveling that I use at home. It came with a plastic case. I put a blade in the razor and throw a couple spares in the case with it. I put my boar brush in a vitamin bottle and take my La Toja stick and my alum block.

When I travel, first thing I do is lower my standards. I don't expect to get as good a shave on the road as I do at home. So I just shoot for a CCS. Anything above that is a bonus.

Next, I leave the brush at home. There isn't any soap or cream that can't be lathered up with just rubbing palm against face. Works just fine. Software is whatever leftovers I have sitting around ... almost used up tubes of cream, a sliver of soap in a zip-lock bag, or samples I've collected from AoS or through PIFs or various BST transactions.

The razor is probably going to be disposable, like a BIC Sensitive or Gillette Good News. If I do take a DE, it will likely be an EJ89L or Merkur 34G, and if travelling somewhere that TSA will be involved, I'll buy blades at my destination from a drugstore or supermarket.

Two rules to remember about traveling shave kits:
1)Avoid any hardware that has "Travel" in its model name. Whether its a razor or a brush or whatever, anything designed for traveling is probably over-priced and under-powered. Just take your regular at-home gear. You won't need to worry about saving space and weight unless you're going up in the space shuttle or competing in the Tour de France.
2)Don't take anything you can't afford to lose. This includes Family Heirloom razors and brushes, expensive and hard to get soaps and creams and aftershaves, and anything you can't replace easily. You never know what might fall victim to an over-zealous TSA agent, loss, theft from a hotel room, or just plain clumsiness. This rule also applies to everything else you take with you ... cameras, laptops, iPads, jewelry, etc.

Last time I went to Cuba my wife just grabbed me some cheap disposables from a store. They were so terrible I ended up having a goatee for most of the trip because I couldnt finish shaving.

Normally I dont travel much on aircraft so I just take my Muhle R89 with me, and the blades in those little plastic cases in my hygeine kit bag.

I wouldn't think about carrying my straight and other necessary equipment for it, so it would be my tracII razor and Creamo Cream for me.

I got moves like Jagger
When I travel, I generally bring the following:
- shave stick (usually Arko as it lathers in ANY water and is, plain an simple, a good soap)
- a brush (right now the Omega 599 silvertip accompanies me)
- either a shavette or a DE (DE on a cruise due to lack of bathroom space, shavette at a hotel)
- alum block
- decant of AS

I take a superspeed in it's original case , proraso soap in a tub and a brush . I put it all in a Calvin Klein toiletry bag I got with some cologne years ago aloing with my toothbrush , deodorant , etc.

When I can check a bag....

I travel almost every week for work, usually driving. I bring along my Merkur 34C without a blade installed, a 5 pack if blades, and a AoS leather travel kit. Got the kit with a gift card I needed to spend. Not sure if I would have spent the 80 on it otherwise. The leather case has a nice holder on the top for your razor. It also comes with sample sizes of each of their product (I went with sandalwood) and a small pure badger brush with case. I can also fit a small plastic brush stand in there, and then I am set.

I take my usual razor (EJ89), a soap or cream, usually a small Omega boar brush, styptic pencil, and blades of choice. I pack my razor (assembled but no blade in it), brush, and blades in a travel soap container. I try to take something like Proraso so I don't need a separate bowl; I'm a face latherer. If I take a cream I'll take my VDH lather bowl, it's small and stout. If I have to do carry on and can't take blades or cream then I go with a soap and take some Bic Metal dispoables.

Merkur 23C disassembled so it will lay flat in my kit. 2 blades, both wrapped and in a compartment in my kit. 1 shave stick. Small restored brush with 20mm TGN finest knot in it. Small and quick to dry. AS and cologne sample packs. That will get me through any traveling. If I lose some or all of it, there's nothing irreplacable, but it is still good gear. No sense compromising if you don't have to.

Hi,

I travel with a generic (unbranded) Slant made in Solingen. So, not anything special. Those Slants have differential aggressiveness, so one side is milder than the other. This is like having two razors in one. A small horsehair brush and an Old Spice mug loaded with Carden Farms soap. The blades are in an old Schick 10 blade dispenser, which is reloadable. New blades on top, and used blade storage on the bottom. This gets me to DFS, which is good enough.

If flying, then just the brush and a Mach 3. I will use the facial soap at the hotel for shaving soap, which works fairly well. This gets me to CCS, but will not last 24 hours like the Slant does. Often, I need to shave a second time for the evening with this rig.
